The Mayans were fueling the Sun! December 12, 2012 is when the Sun runs out of fuel...  ushering in an ice age that will never end, forcing humanity to live deep underground.  To dig ever deeper toward the core as the earth's core cools over the millennia...

Or.. a single person learns that he/she must sacrifice humans to resurrect and power the Sun...  Taking it upon his/herself... the hero sets out into the world to cleanse the land of humanitysave what she can, in the process making life long friends, facing many hardships and making heart-wrenching decisions. 
Will our hero succeed in their quest... ?  Or is Earth doomed to a never ending ice-age?

Actually, something oddball occurred to me while wikiwalking about spaceflight. Voyager 1 is predicted to officially exit the solar system and enter the interstellar medium any day now. If you follow the Zoo hypothesis, perhaps a human-created object leaving the solar system would be the trigger to make contact, and Dec 12, 2012 will be the day they make contact.

*note: I'm just saying this is kind of a neat twist on the Mayan scenario. Don't ask me how on Earth the Mayans would have predicted it. Unless they were secretly time-traveling aliens.
