Hatred is free advertisement, many people will take a look at it just cause people are talking about it, good or bad.  To see for themselves.  I suppose there are a few examples, like recent controversial stuff in games like... CoD was it?  (Well it was a shooter or something with Russians and an airport.) 
There is also the kickstarter videos about the portrayal of women in games, massive hate and pushback there.

Just remembered this one; my mum asked if the earth goes round the sun or if the sun goes round the earth over the weekend. She's usually pretty smart so this came completely out of nowhere, I let her figure it out but she still wanted confirmation. 



Oh and then a few weeks before that she was looking at a map of earth at night and said "that's America, right?" pointing at Africa. Her excuse was apparently they look different at night.

I'm now hoping she's not going senile or something.
