Dubstep's a form of electronic music that emphasizes "drops." Tends to have a lot of buildup followed by a heavy bass solo.

Also nice dismissive attitude :P

Pretty much. When Skrillex said an Aphex Twin song was his favourite song on FB and posted a link to it, people complained it didn't have a drop and there was no heavy bass "to scare the shit out of me."

I dislike dubstep in the same way I dislike folk music. There's still good stuff there, it's just painful to find it.
Actually, this is a great explanation. Definitely going to remember that.
I prefer the description that it sounds like a fax machine and a dial up modem having sex. Not because I think it's more accurate, but because it's funnier.

There is good dubstep out there, but not a whole lot of it. Five songs, maybe. Most way overdo it. Dubstep makes a nice compliment to part of a song, it doesn't work as a whole song. It's like jazz flute, a little goes a long way. :P

I think it sounds like one layer of a song that should have three - by itself it's equal parts boring and bewildering (and there's nothing to balance it out so it's 100% ear-bleeding painful bass).

Once our school held a Wake-a-thon to raise money. Someone brought their own stereo and their phone which had dubstep on it, and plunked it down in the most crowded room without telling anyone. Then they turned it on.

Their phone was mysteriously lost that night, six hours later (and after numerous people in positions of authority backed up by everyone in the room told them to turn it the hell off but it was not turned the hell off).

I know, there's dubstep (or at least stuff with wub wubs in it, which to me makes it dubstep) that I like out there.

To return to thread topic:

A coworker known for not being one of the sharpest knives in the drawer once engaged me in this... interesting conversation.

Coworker: "Why don't we fall off the Earth? I've tried to get a paper clip to stick to a basketball, but it just falls off."
Me: "... Earth has gravity?"
Coworker: "But how does it work?"

At this point I was tempted to go into General Relativity, as I have a basic understanding of it. But there was no way this girl was going to be able to follow me, so I tried a different tack.

Me: "Imagine a magnetic cannonball."
Coworker: "What's a cannonball?"
Me: (facepalm) "Imagine a big metal ball... and it's magnetic. The paper clip will stick on any side, right?"
Coworker: "Right..."
Me: "Gravity is kind of like that."

She now looks thoughtful, and then asks me the following question. We might laugh at this question, but considering the analogy I used, it is a perfectly valid question to ask.

Coworker: "Is there anything gravity doesn't work on?"
Me: "No, it works on everything."

She looks thoughtful again, and I start congratulating myself for explaining gravity in terms she could understand. Then this...

Coworker: "So who invented that then?"

I told her 'some guy who lives in a blue box.' Unsurprisingly, she didn't get it.
