This idea that 0.999... does not equal 1 that some people have.

I disagree with this. I know it can be proved with modern human mathematics, but I feel this is only proof that modern human mathematics is flawed.  That same proof says basically 1.0E-∞ = 0, because that number doesn't exist in human mathematics.
0.999... Does not equal 1.  0.999... + 1.0E-∞ = 1.

I kinda want to argue for .9999... equaling 1, but those arguments are always really annoying and really pointless.
That is the gist of what I was trying to say. :P

That may be what is intuitive, but math isn't intuitive. There is no such thing as 1.0E-∞. It takes a fundamental misunderstanding of infinity to think that that is a thing.

Putnam does not say that. In fact, he says the exact opposite.

Rightly so, even.

Actually, 1*10^-infinity does exist; it's just that it's exactly zero.

You can't say there is no such thing as 1.0E-∞. Just because it's not used in modern mathematics doesn't mean it doesn't exist.  It being able to be written is proof enough that it can exist.

it equals zero for the same reason 0.999... = 1, it's a flaw in mathematics.

1*10^-infinity is not the same thing as the very real infinitesimals that you are describing.

Okay. Yeah, with that I now think Putnam's right... So kudos, Putnam.
Thankfully I named myself properly for this kind of situation. :P

I like how the stupid thread got swallowed by the jaws of infinity.

Concerning all this mathematical talk:

There is no such number as infinity. Things can be described as infinite, but this does not mean "of size infinity", it means "larger than any finite size".

Yes, there does exist a symbol for infinity, and sometimes mathematicians use that symbol in equations. This is just them cutting corners, and really they shouldn't be doing it. Whenever you see a mathematician using the infinity symbol in such a way, you should be thinking "if I stuck a number there and kept increasing it by arbitrarily large amounts, what would the result get arbitrarily close to?"

It's not helped by the fact we aren't good at imagining an infinity.

I can though...

Would you guys rather I use the notation 0.000...1
(for an endless number of zeroes before the one)

I imagine infinity looks like an angry wall that won't let anyone touch it. That's what happens when you view an asymptote on a TI.
