Because Socialism is the idea a person's life and their work do not belong to them, but belong to society, thus it's antithetical to the idea that a person has the right to exist for their own sake and their own actions belong to them.

Also I imagine because Socialism hasn't worked out very well historically. It's purpose was 'the abolition of poverty, the achievement of general prosperity, progress and peace' and in practice it accomplished quite the opposite.

Any sort of power carries responsibility. For one to have no obligation except to themselves, they'd have to live completely alone, with power over no one.

Any sort of power carries responsibility. For one to have no obligation except to themselves, they'd have to live completely alone, with power over no one.

They'd say, human relationships are ideally, voluntary. That people should be free to interact and deal with others as their own interests and convictions dictate. That involuntary relationships, like that between a slave and their master, are not really the kind of ethic they prefer. People don't need to be hermits to be free, but that even in a complex society, individual rights and voluntary agreements hold greater moral value then involuntary obligations to others.

They might not be perfect, but historically, people in socialist countries braved walls and barbed wire and machinegun fire to go live in democracies and republics, not the other way around.
