Stupidest fear campaign i've heard of recently - iDosing

Sitting in a dark room listening to repetitive drum'n'bass mp3 track's on headphones is latest 'drug craze'. And it might just lead to smoking pot, then onto shooting up cocaine and heroin!

Quote
Narcotics authorities in the US admit are concerned that the practice of searching online for stronger iDoses leads users down the path to more harmful practices.
"iDosing" can be seen as a gateway drug, they claim.

Oklahoma’s Mustang Public School district isn’t taking the threat lightly, and sent out a letter to parents warning them of the new craze. The educators have gone so far as to ban iPods at school, in hopes of preventing honor students from becoming cyber-drug fiends, News 9 reports.
What is this?  (Goes to download.)

If "drum 'n' bass" refers to the shit most fashionable people around here listen to these days, then more power to that campaign. :P

The iDose people want you to pay $US9.99 for a 25 minute track, which is why they were never keen on debunking the idea that it's cyber-crack. The furor massively boosted net traffic to their site.

Basically they're "atonal" loops that go for 25 or 55 minutes (which is a cheap $14.99).

Technically, this stuff is probably less listenable than actual drum and bass albums.

Here's a 20 minute drum'n'bass track, the first thing that appears on google search:

I always associate this scene with my old friends who scoff ecstasy like candies.

Honestly I can see it becoming a behavioral addiction, because anything one enjoys can become a behavioral addiction. Gambling's the most well known one but only because it has severe negative consequences.

I probably have several behavioral addictions, myself. Porn, internet forums, porn, world of warcraft, porn... Though in serious, I'm cutting back on the porn simply because I'm getting the most horrible of side effects from my anti depressants: reduced sex drive. It makes me sad, but probably not as sad as going off them.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Yeah, I'd say using porn as a sleep aid probably borders on an addiction for me xD (Especially since I'm on medication that knocks me right out and I could sleep standing up now if I wanted)

I was reading about them in a list of the stupidest moral panics ever, not the latest thing, but new to me, and a lot of people might have missed them

Certain audio stimulus can do wacky things. Not quite so much as, say, sci fi (mind control and whatnot), but stimulating pleasure centers is pretty much a certainty, and that's all you need for an addiction.

Yeah but I thought thats more subtle influence. Doesn't addiction usually require substantial?

As for anything addictive you can jam into an audio track, you can bet that record producers are already using every trick in the book. After all a single's job is to hook you.

As someone who's name i forget (possibly Jello Biafra) once wrote about the similar backwards masking panic, "if backwards masking really worked, every song would have 'buy the album' backwards masked on it"
