I am creating a monster. (Computer build.)
« on: July 30, 2012, 12:03:20 pm »

As I mentioned in the happy thread, the time has come for me to create a new monster. I made one a few years ago, in 2009 if memory serves. Today I had to lower the graphical settings on a game, so now it is time to make a new one.

The old one:
*MSI X58 Pro
*Intel I7-975
*6gb of 1600MHz TriChannel Ram
*150gb Velociraptor for the OS.
*1tb drive for storage.
*ATI Radeon HD5970
*Corsair HX 1000W PSU

And this is what I am thinking for the new one, note that this is just a first iteration and some research will have to be done to decide exactly what parts to use.

The new one:
*Gigabyte Mod 1155 GBT GA-Z77-DS3H (I might change to an MSI board since it worked well the last time.)
*Intel 1155 i7-3770k (I am thinking of going a bit higher though, maybe for a 3960X)
*Intel 3930k (After some reading around, the amount of juice gained from the 3960X does not really justify the price gap. The 3930k is simply a better deal.)
*32gb of 1600MHz Ram
*90gb SSD Corsair Force Series GT (For the OS.)
*480gb Corsair SSD Force Series (For installed games.)
*2tb drive (for media and storage.)
*Nvidia GTX680 4gb
*CORSAIR AX 1200W Professional Series PSU

Hopefully this will be enough to run Dwarf Fortress! :p
But anyways, anyone have any ideas about how to improve this build?

you know an advantage to building a computer yourself is that you can just replace 1-2 parts at a time, the only things that might give any real difference in performance is the graphics card, getting an ssd and maybe getting more ram(depending on what you are doing).

also that hard-drive doesn't look nearly as extravagant as the other stuff, you know velociraptors go up to 1tb and you can get normal speed drives that go up to 4tb

32 GB RAM? Are you building this thing to outlast the Second Coming of Christ?

Think about it. You may never need to have a page file, again...

The current one I will give as a present to my father so yes I need to build a completely new one. Yeah I have been thinking of just going one SSD for the OS and using a bigger Velociraptor for storage/games, I will have to do some more research on the current state of SSD's before deciding I guess.

I must have ALL the RAM. No but seriously, RAM is ridiculously cheap so I have found no reason not to stack it as much as possible.

Hah :p

Build is coming along nicely, at the moment I am in the phase of finding the best price for all the parts.

Create a virtual drive in your ram and shove your pagefile into that, you'll find your hdd lasting longer too.

Holy fuck the raptor itself costs more than half my brother's build O_o

edit: i remembered mine total was $1000 but shit dude i rather take that raptor and just buy 3x1tb 7200rpm drives, trust me you don't really see much difference at that speed anymore and better off either getting more storage or a bigger SSD

I bet they said the same thing 10 years ago when we were installing our 1 GB RAM in our awesome computers. :P

Funny, I have almost the same setup as your "old build", except that I got an SSD for the OS (Anyone who still hasn't done that, DO IT NOW, best thing since whipped cream), and a bigger cpu fan (scythe mugen I believe). Alas, I do not have the money (and if I had, not the argumentative skills to override my gf) to get a new setup like that... I bow to you.

But isn't 1200W a bit overkill?
