Yes, but heuristics are only part of a good antimalware suite. A database of disinfection routines for common threats is another, especially for threats that embed themselves in otherwise innocent files. Disinfection routines for DRM exist, and more are made every day. They just aren't available outside shadier sources.

I think you're still missing the point. AV and cleaning routines are reactive, rarely are they proactive. And the more proactive they are, the more likely they are to interfere with legitimate user operations. AV doesn't yet exist that can catch a problem before anyone knew there was a problem.

Yes, but you should be able to report invasive DRM as a threat after it comes out, and if there is enough interest the companies should develop a fix for the threat.

Lots of viruses used to be one-off things that embed themselves in other files. Antivirus companies developed patchers that removed and/or disabled the code added by the virus without compromising the original program.

I can confirm that patch is bunk.

Didn't have UPlay installed, exploit didn't work.  Installed UPlay with the patch, exploit worked.  Removed all traces of the damnable thing, exploit doesn't work.
Be sure to follow their instructions; close the web browsers first.

And to anyone else with it on their system, can we get confirmation on whether it works or not?

What everyone thinks as invasive drm, ubisoft & co will think of as necessary because they need their poorly made (orotherwise wrong) security blanket from the pirates that already ripped in two more than likely.

Honestly, I don't particularly care what they think if their software would allow a hacker into my computer.

This is frustrating, sure, but I'm not going to be uninstalling games over it, or denying myself certain games because I disagree with a company's policy. I'm not a fan of Ubisoft's DRM, but it's nothing I'll get my undies twisted up about.

And to anyone else with it on their system, can we get confirmation on whether it works or not?

The patch worked just fine on my end. Uplay still opens through the browser, but nothing else does.

I disabled it anyways. If I want to start Uplay, I'm perfectly capable of starting it myself.

Who said anything about denying yourself games? XBox 360s don't have or require UPlay, or Origin/EADM, or anything else like that.

Anywho; patch is available and by the sounds of it should be working so long as you follow their instructions to close browsers first.

Locking the thread preemptively now, as the thread will almost certainly devolve into a DRM shitfest (DRM, after all, is worse than politics and religion when it comes to flame-incitement), warnings have been posted on many, soon most, major news sites of the exploit, and as this thread was intended as an early warning, its purpose has been served.
