Once again publishers try their hardest to make sure that even people who buy their games will want to download the no-CD no-DRM crack.

Companies have right to stop piracy
stopping piracy is not possible

the time and resources that it takes to implement some worthless drm scheme are time and resources that could be better served by improving the actual game in some way
I agree, but let me rephrase that. Companies have the right to try to impede pirates as much as possible. Just like I have the right not to buy their product if their DRM is too intrusive/inconvenient.

There comes a point where DRM and copy protection measures are so intrusive, harmful, or deceptive that you have to wonder why they're legal in the first place.

Too true. And we passed that long ago by the way. This is the... what? Fifth? Time DRM has bricked/destroyed security on people's computers?

Previously, I would never consider getting games from anything but approved sources, but now I almost wonder if I should consider illegal sources safer. At least common antivirus/etc. programs aren't hardwired to ignore possible threats there; unlike corporate attack programs...

Oh, wasn't there some company a few years ago that lobbied to change the term to "Digital Consumer Empowerment"? Doubleplus-ungood!

What we need is a return to the paper wheels of ages past.

Yeah, all this DRM really, really sucks.
I have one single game on my PC that has DRM (well, not counting for steam, steam is perfectly fine with me, and i have it on most of my PC games)  and it bothers me very much. Its RF:G, and GFWL doesnt even have a proper chat function :/

Theres also the point between 'somewhat helpful base of protection' (Serial keys are rather easy to keygen eventually, but you need to know such things exist in the first place to find that out) and 'Shut up and deal with it if you want to play, you potential pirate' (Most of what Ubisoft has done, always-on, etc). Passing that point is less helping legal customers and more acting like an angry  mama bear over your product.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

I can confirm that patch is bunk.

Didn't have UPlay installed, exploit didn't work.  Installed UPlay with the patch, exploit worked.  Removed all traces of the damnable thing, exploit doesn't work.

I don't know why modern antivirus/antispyware/antirootkit software doesn't even pick up these things, much less offer to fix them.
Morally, they have a responsibility to their customers to subvert intrusive rootkit/monitoring programs, regardless of their source. That's what they paid for for heaven's sake! Disable unwanted tracking/security-breaching software without removing functionality from other programs.

Reminds me of the time I heard some big antivirus company (I forget which one) was partnering with the USA government to ensure that future versions wouldn't pick up their "wiretapping" software.

It's not a case against DRM, it's a case against poor coding.  Unfortunately, the two seem to go hand-in-hand.

AV/Anti-Root Kits aren't magic. They can't magically look at 3rd party software and decide what parts of it work and what parts of it don't. This is bad code that leads to an exploit, not malware. And any software that correctly targeted this thing as a problem would have broken Uplay functionality. AV can't fix people's code, it can only prevent parts of it from executing.

Sorry, this thing is silly, but you're basically wishing AV was magical when it's not. No amount of smartly coded AV can counter poorly formulated code and/or 3rd party applets. Much less fix its problems.

As more games link into your web browser for functionality, the more common problems of this nature are going to become.
