I've just finished in May at Leeds Met.

My first year I lived in halls and paid a set amount for internet for the year, you need to take a look at your residence and see if it is included in the rent (also check if utility bills are included too)

What will you need? Depends again what you get. Are you provided with knives, forks etc? Microwave? Cooking stuff? Might need your bedding etc.

When you move there go and look for your nearest Wilkos, you're gonna need it :D

In regards to what it'll be like, depends what kind of person you are really. Uni is what you make it, I went out 2-3 nights a week and every night in Freshers week, prepare to be very very hungover.

Most of all, ENJOY IT! You are (presumably) young and you'll make mistakes, that's the whole fun of Uni. Everyone else is in the same boat as you but trust me, those three years will fly by. It doesn't seem like three years ago that my parents dropped me off at halls and left me there.

Also, enjoy the astronomical fees :D I paid £2k a year for mine, they've since raised it to £9k. Bloody government.

My advice is simple. Don't be afraid to hop subjects if something isn't working. I don't have the attention span for the math involved in the subjects that I originally wanted to do (horray for ADHD!), but I'm excellent at art despite not having any formal education on it past high school. I'm having to take a year off to prep an art portfolio for scholarships and get enough for a security deposit for either res or an apartment. Then I'll be moving to Montreal for an art school more tailored towards production art and such.

If I'd realized what I'd loved to do and that there was a future in it I would have jumped ship long ago and not be in so much debt. If you love doing something, go for it. Don't waste your time with something you're going to hate when you finish.

Don't worry about having a car. Since you're in the UK, it won't be necessary, and it'll just cost you a fortune. You'll be in university halls for your first year, which is almost always in walking distance (or cycling distance if you don't like long walks and are unlucky) or where you'll have your lectures and things. I would, however, reccommend getting a bike if you don't already have one. For subsequent years, you'll either be in university accomodation again, and be in the same situation, or you'll be in rented accomodation, and you'll be able to get something not far enough to warrant a car.

Student accomdoation generally consists of a whole bunch of students in a building, organized into a corridor of between half a dozen and a dozen people. The corridor normally shares a kitchen, and bathroom facilities will be either ensuite or shared in the corridor. Lectures, at least a first, will typically be an hour in length, with a handful a day. Since you're doing computing, I would recommend making yourself familiar with a lot of the material that the mathematicians are covering. To be specific, I would recommend that you study linear algebra and some differentiual equations, as you'll likely find them very useful.

Other than that, I would advise that you don't stick to the computer scientist stereotype of never leaving your room. University is a unique experience, and you'll have an awful lot of opportunities that you'll never get anywhere else, make the most of them.

If any other questions emerge, feel free to post them.

Do you know what accomodation block you'll be in? Some universities have applying for accomodation as a seperate process from applying to study there. Don't be afraid to phone up the university and ask.

Looking at their accomodation guide (http://www.staffs.ac.uk/assets/M3778%20Accommodation%20brochure%20V2_tcm44-47588.pdf), it looks like you'll want to bring the following:

-Cooking equipment
-Bed linen
-A bike
-Laptop
-Clothes, mobile phone, money, etc.

You'll be on a 36 week lease, which means that you'll have your room over the winter and easter holidays, but not the summer. You can probably get this lease extended for a few weeks, but you'd have to contact the accomodation pretty far in advance about that. You will be able to leave your posessions in your room over the winter and easter holidays, but over the summer you have to move out. Most places publish a fresher's guide which will tell you in more detail what you will need. Ask the university about that, it'll either be out already or in a short time.

Here's this page for applying for accomodation. It's first come first serve, so don't dilly-dally. The student loan doesn't go direct to the university, it goes through you first. Poking around that website and calling them should give you more in-deth answers, though.
