Author Topic: Suddenly asked to be an Admin/Staff Member in RP Forum, indecisive as fuck.  (Read 2823 times)

Holy fuck I wasn't prepared for this.

After a discussion on an RP Forum about what items could be used for on the Cbox, one of the members of staff just randomly asked If I'd like to be one of the members of Staff out of the blue. I don't know whether to be honored, or absolutely shitting bricks over this. I've been sort of active on there for two-three years, mainly sometimes blipping out of existance for a week or so, and now I'm suddenly asked to become one of pieces of the backbone of the place. I've been an admin once, but I abused my power during my stay there, and that scares me because I'm worried I might do it again, and they already had someone like that abuse their power so bad they had to make a new RP Forum just to get away from him. I feel like King Arthur in The Sword in the Stone, when he suddenly becomes king over getting a sword out of a rock; I don't know what to do.  :-[

My two cents:

If you are worried you may abuse, don't take it. Respectfully turn it down.

For some reason, I think it might help if I also put in the conversation we had, but I'm not really sure:

That's my advice as well.

I for one try to avoid any major responsibilities as possible.
Not because I might abuse whatever power I may be granted, but because I am very lazy.

the fact that you recognise the possibility of abusing power and that disgusts you instead of thrilling you makes you perfect for the job. while you're there, remember to listen to your underlings' input, you might lose perspective. but don't be too submissive or you might become a tool of mob rule

I'm gonna say, as a former admin/mod of an anime RP forum...  you would be doing your fellows a disservice if you are sporadically inactive.  The admin guy even mentioned it... if you like to keep your activity on a 'go for +5 days and come back whenever you please' basis, turn it down.

Another thing is... are you even interested in taking on the responsibility of doing the NPC stuff?  That is, if its optional or whatever it is in context to whatever you are doing now.  If not, it is better for you to just decline and just do what you are already doing.

Also, some decorum of impartial-ness needs to be kept... but the nature of your offered job makes it look easy from my perspective...  it just gets harder when you gain more power... if you so choose.

I'll say this now: Once an admin, never a player.

If you become a staff member, you will find it harder and harder to actually play the game, and in all likelyness, you'll just stop playing and moderate it instead.

This.
On a minecraft server, i had alot of friends, and most of them eventually ascended to moderator status.
But once they did... they changed. People become different when they are admins or mods.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

This happened to me when I became a high-ranking member of an online community (it was a "public" chat channel on Runescape). I spent so much time moderating the channel that my actual enjoyment of the game suffered. Truth be told, it directly contributed to my quitting the game for good.

I never let the power become an issue, and I can't speak to whether it would be a problem for you. But you should consider the impact of a new role on how much you'll enjoy your experience on that forum.

Douchebags are bigger douches when they have power. Technically they are different people... yes?

I asked my brother and mom about what to do, and they said yes. Thinking about it, I decided to say yes to the offer, so now I'm a game moderator in it.  :D

Congratulations... though... without the context of knowing your brother and mom... it does raise some 'they don't know jack' alarms, especially the mention of 'mom'.

Just remember being an admin is a thankless job where you have to deal with stupid people who have stupid issues with other stupid people every day, it's not as great as it's made out to be.

Well, you do have a busy life, what with keeping tabs on wild, rough-and-tumble forum members while sorting out the drama between your twenty two inner lesbians.
Your drunk posts continue to baffle me.
