Seuche smiled at the stranger, pushing herself up with her lower arms. 'Hardly a sea captain, I'm afraid. My ship crosses worlds, like from this one to another. I don't believe I've been here before, though.'

: "Worlds? Hmm. Suppose given existence of other worlds, some would be advanced more than mine." Queen tilted her head. "Tell, captain: if we're dead, how's it you expect finding your old ship?"

"Hmm, how can we be dead, and yet not dead? I certainly feel alive!

Do you mean in our previous worlds, we are for all intents and purposes dead, but we are still alive here and now?"

"Analyzing question...Done. Activating memory core...Done. Loading custom explanation loadout #0002 Technically, you are not really dead per say, but your bodies have sustained blows so hard that you are practically gone. What has been offered is a new chance. You are all here because by random happenstance, the multiverse granted you the trial for your own life. Don't worry about bleeding out and dying though, time works in mysterious ways, and inside this place time doesn't seem to work at all! So to summarize: You have a body in this world, and in your own world. The one in your own world is damaged beyond repair, except these trials can heal you up to tip top shape, maybe even shave some years off your life!"

"What is the general term for this place, one that can connect different...worlds?"

"On whatever we may fight beyond the barrier, what weapons exist in this plane? I am only skilled in a rudimentary few, that of music and the bow."

"Also, do we require nourishment - food or water, being...both dead and not dead?"

"Analyzing questions...Done. Activating memory core...Done. Loading custom explanation loadout #4521, #8812 and #0024 This place is called "Destraiti" by those native to the world of Daros, but I guess you can call it Acos. That is what my databanks say it is called for short by the way.

There exists countless types of weapons in this world, all from firearms to crossbows to swords to plasma cannons to forks and umbrellas and even other people. Endless combination of useless crap can be molded and used for combat here! All you really need is to pick up the item and start mastering how it works! Of course, starting with what you know will always grant you a favor with said weaponry, having already either learned or mastered how to use it. Even music can be weaponized, if you have the right items!

And finally: Yes, you do need food and water to survive. For now, time seems stopped to all of you, but as soon as I remove the veil, your bodies will start to react to your base needs once more. I sadly cannot help you with the gathering, but I can point out where delicious things are. I am a living database of this world afterall."

'Say, you mentioned others before us. What happened to them?'

"Analyzing question...Done. Activating memory core...Done. Loading custom explanation loadout #0394 They all failed in their journey at a second chance. Countless has fallen to simple starvation, or falling over the edge of the world. Some even got killed by the monsters, or gave up and was taken by the reaper! Yes sir there are countless ways to fail your single try at getting your life back!"

She continues to watch, then after a moment, seems to remembering something-and turn back to you. She seems to notice your blushing, leaning in ever closer.

"...hmm, why is your face showing marked coloration? Are you suffering from the sudden onset of fever or, um...heatstroke? Let me take a closer look!" An embarrassing collision seems imminent, when her attention is taken up by the machine.
His temporary distraction failing (he really hoped at least the golem caught her attention if Bowser didn't), Nikolai was preparing to move back and escape the collision when Sadie was interrupted by the thing that seemed a robot, answering all of their questions. Whew. He sighed in relief and used the opportunity to stare at the artificial intelligence and pay attention to what it was talking.
: "So we are basically dead in a way, although having a second shot at life. Well, I can say the world hasn't lost anything with my absence. I am ready to face what lies beyond." Nikolai said, convinced now would be as good a moment as any since the remaining members of the group were waking up.

Not exactly, though. He stared at the short and stocky human that was still lying on the pedestal and grumbling about punching people.

'If we're dead - and I've yet to see any evidence towards that, then I'd assume my ship would've followed me to the afterlife, or whatever this world is. It would be a simple matter of finding it and setting sail elsewhere. I think. That seems logical.'

Then, hearing the cuboid's explanation, she reconsidered. 'Oh. It sounds like my body may have ended in yet another place, however that works. I think for now we should just go along with it.'

She cleared her throat. 'I am ready to face what lies beyond.'

Lying with an arm over her eyes and half-awake, Kaina suddenly coiled and rolled into a crouching ready position at the mentioning about being practically dead in her own world.

"Wha- I don- erm, why was this world even made?" She made a couple of false starts, then settled on a random question while trying to shake off the rest of her sleep. She glanced around, noting where everyone was just in case.

"I'm ready, though. I always am."

The golem turned him down. Oh well, it was stupid after all. At least it was not punching him anymore. But as childlike as its mindset was, Bowser really didn't feel like burning it burning it anymore. "Whatever. Just don't punch me again." Bowser just said, turning his attention to the group again. "Anyway, I've been dead before, and this don't feel dead. And if we are, it's an easy fix. Death can be bribed where I come from, and me, being a King, can easily afford it. Or if we get back to my realm, we just find some of those green mushrooms. Either way, I'll be stomped if I just sit down and give up."

"But anyway, I don't need weapons. I got plenty already." Bowser said, flexing his claws. "Cube thingie, just point me in the direction of some meat I can get for us, and a source of water, and get rid of that fog. And we're gonna need somewhere we can use for a base of operations. ...oh, right, what was that phrase? I'm ready to face what lies beyond."

: "Least you're confident, level-headed, unlike others." Queen chuckled and pointed to the veil of fog. "Would you like to travel with me, gather resources? Afraid this world's threat level remains unknown."

Queen decided she had one last question for the sprite before it lifted the fog.

: "Our powers seem dulled here. How may we re-obtain them?"

"Hmm, how can we be dead, and yet not dead? I certainly feel alive!

"Technically, you are not really dead per say, but your bodies have sustained blows so hard that you are practically gone. What has been offered is a new chance. You are all here because by random happenstance, the multiverse granted you the trial for your own life. [...]

Aidan scowled at the thought. "So...if I was currently falling from a high height and wounded, that is to say, riddled with broadhead arrows and through some unknown path, passed said trial, I'd be fixed and put into a safety zone?

"How quaint."

"Endless combination of useless crap can be molded and used for combat here!
[...] All you really need is to pick up the item and start mastering how it works![...]
"And now I'm unsure on how anything works. How does this happen? We just...will it to be, and fate takes over? I mean, those things can't be found just lying on the ground, right?"

Having asked his questions to the cube-thing, Aidan returned to talk with his two other companions - the young man and the woman.

"I'm ready, though. I always am."

Though, he noticed another nearby, one which he didn't notice earlier. He moved near, hoping to acquaint himself with everyone that wasn't busy.

"I think you should state the whole phrase," he said with a smile, after introducing himself along with his companions. The woman seemed confused about her surroundings, or was that vigilance in her gaze? Nevertheless, she had an intimidating aura around her.

"May I ask of your name, madam?"

"I'm ready, though. I always am."

"I think you should state the whole phrase,"

"May I ask of your name, madam?"

"What phrase?"

Kaina sounds confused. She adds,

"I'm ... Lan. Just Lan."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"I'm ... Lan. Just Lan."
Aidan nodded at the woman's reply.

"Allow me to fill you in, Lan. We're in the world of Daros, going by the name of Alcos. I and those around me, including you, are dead.

"Dead in our own worlds, body battered, bruised and wounded beyond any hope. A higher entity intervened and chose to give us all another chance, or a trial, whichever you want to call it, and the trials we would face would help restore ourselves in our own worlds."

He glanced back at Sadie before continuing, offering his hand if Lan needed help getting up.

"The phrase being: I'm ready to face what lies beyond."

"What phrase?"

Kaina sounds confused. She adds,

"I'm ... Lan. Just Lan."
: "Pleased to meet you." the young man said from behind Aidan.
Nikolai stood unmoving near the cube, watching the elf heading towards the stocky woman. Now that he though about it, weren't elves supposed to be very tall? And it was funny watching him extending his hand for what seemed ages, waiting for the other person to accept help.

"So it seems death is merely another adventure! I couldn't have dreamed of anything better.

Well, Action: I am ready to face what lies beyond as well."

He moved closer to Sadie - as he heard her name earlier. "You're an intellectual being, could you tell me more of...how my people met their end?"

She turned and responded, while waiting for the shield to go down.

"Oh? Well, to understand, you must first know the Ancient Elven people used to have a Empire, situated on three islands-the third is gone and we do not know the name, and the other two make up present day Greenland and Brittania-they called the three Isles home to the vast majority of their people, and build many great monuments and cities, in a sort of co-existence with nature.

Nothing lasts forever, though."

Sadie frowns.

"For some reason, the Elven Isles engaged in a horrible series of wars against each other, and as the horror dragged on and on, they began to tap directly the magical ley-lines-first to empower their forces, later merely to destroy their foes, or deny their opponent resources during retreat. It was a bitter conflict...

We do not know who 'won', but we do know the war ended when the Ley-Beam itself broke. Possibly from the gradual generations of war, or maybe on purpose, a final and horrible act of mutual destruction.

The Middle island was swallowed by the sea, and the Elven people of the other islands were devestated by horrible tidal and earthquake activity. So costly had been the war, the Elven people had no chance of recovery...records vary, but most agree those few left were killed or enslaved at the hands of maruading bands of wild Humans, who established their own Kingdoms on top on the ruins the Elves left behind. Within a few decades, The Elven people were all but extinct.

But all was not entirely lost-today, the Ley-Beam has begun to repair itself, and some believes the Elves may return in a fashion.

After all, the departed energy of the Elven people was not entirely destroyed-it merely rejoined the cycle of magic, and went on to progeniate many magical races-my own Merfolk the least of them, so they and I are related, in a way."

You might not have noticed it before, but do her ears do have a decidely Elvish arch to them? Hmm...

Sadie looks at you again, perhaps trying to read your emotion.

"...Oh. This must be very sad for you to hear, even if our worlds are different. I am sorry if I am causing you distress, Aidan. What's history to me, someone else had to live through..."
