Let's colonize the sun. The surface isn't all that hot so I hear.

I'd like a source on Mars taking 1500 years to terraform. I can find no data suggesting that number, from NASA or anyone else. Furthermore, it was once asserted to me that NASA thought Mars could be terraformed to the point of not needing a pressure suit or air supply to walk around by 2100 if we started now, far less than 1500 years.

Anyone have any sources on Martian terraform projections?

Last word I heard on Venus was that we could blow a hole in the atmosphere with directed gamma waves to lessen the air pressure, and replace the remaining atmosphere with the standard oxygen-nitrogen mix from there.

If we can fix a hostile environment to be suitable to humans and other Earth life, how about fixing the shit we're putting ourselves in with global warming?

There are seven billion of us, we can multitask sustaining Earth and terraforming Luna/Venus/Mars/all of the above.

I guess that that only works on extremes. and over long periods.
I think it wouldnt be very good for mankind in the short-term if we blew a hole in the atmosphere.

It has a surface... zone... thing. The point separating FIRE and SPACE :P

Problem is that any projection is going to depend on the methods used, many of which are purely at the theoretical stage or which are currently not feasible (such as crashing comets into an atmosphere to get ammonia-ice).

Short-duration forays on the surface without a pressure suit might be feasible in....I dunno, 100 years if we started now and kept at it hard? Long-term, settlers are still going to have to live and work in shielded structures unless you can create a magnetosphere. Not to mention you'll be constantly losing water and atmosphere into space without a magnetic field.

I have found some sources.

The first one states that the technology to begin with the first phase of  terraforming will be availleble by 2100.

More as I find them

Pseudoscience, and also wrong. Unless there's something I'm missing here, the Sun's "surface" is either just a bit thicker than deep space or hot enough to boil magma.

About terraforming: Not needed. If you'd read the original thread, you'd notice people (yours truly included) thinking of mostly-subterranean habitats in most of these places. Pros: Dwarfiness, protection. Cons: Not much, except perhaps claustrophobia.

And regardless of its temperature, the Sun is made of ionized plasma. Even if it were room temperature we couldn't build much there. I think. I've never really seen ionized plasma up close.

Sure you have. Plasma lamps, aurora's and others. . Lightnings can produce it. Plasma globes are fun and widespread

But yeah, no building on plasma.
