It's... essentially horse training, I think.  And scored in a similar way to gymnastics.  It does feel very out of place.

Well, I interpreted as being sort-of where they just show off the horses, give the audience/judges a look at them before they start their actual events. I'm not sure how it ended up as an actual event, though.

OMFG, Japanese competitor in Dressage is 71, and first competed back in the Tokyo games in the 60's!
That chap is also the oldest person competing in this olympics.

Also, there are some state on the dimensions of the athletes, and the heaviest is over 7 times the weight of the lightest.

I hope NBC loses coverage of the Olympics in the US. Their coverage has been fucking appalling.

Yeah, it's been pretty goddamn awful. Not airing the memorial ceremony for 7/7, airing nipple slips in water polo, not showing live coverage in order to show it during prime-time (who the hell came up with that idea?) and just an overall bad feel. Makes me not want to watch the olympics.

I admit that I haven't done a ton of looking, because I easily got pissed at how much NBC had the thing locked down (and other than a poor quality, what appeared to be spanish-language broadcast, consisting mostly of events which weren't even going on at the time and thus had no actual competetors on the field) I haven't found a way to watch the olympics online. Anyone know how? NBC requires a cable tv subscription.

I was interested in seeing the sailing, personally. Although I've enjoyed watching most of the events I've caught on other people's tvs. Except the basketball, most of this stuff doesn't usually get much coverage in the US.

Been a good day of Games today.
Been watching a heap of basketball, and of course we have/had high medal chances in the rowing. :)
Exciting stuff all around!

I'd just like to see the Olympics without Bob-fucking-Costas.

Caught the US women winning gold in rowing yesterday, and a bit of the men's swimming. Kinda starting to suffer "Olympics fatigue". Hopefully interest will be reinvigorated this weekend with all the track & field events starting up. Nothing like watching Jamaican guys run really, really fast.  :P

Sadly, I missed the gymnastics all-around. Gabby Douglas is rapidly becoming a big deal.

Caught a bit of hurdling/sprinting and a men's steeplechase. Oh wait, you get American coverage. :-\ Dang...
Now there's some diving going on. Not my favourite event.

Also high jump:

The basketball probably remains my favourite event so far. :)
The steeplechase was great, too, though; as was the rowing.

Was Jess Ennis in what you were watching Yoink?

If so it was the Heptathlon so the events like High Jump keep going until everyone is out. Hence one being left

If you can't watch the BBC stream off their site, you might be able to follow their text updates, they're very good.

Although I have been rather irritated at some of the disproportionate coverage. Lots of the papers here spend more time talking about athletes who might win a gold than those who actually hahe gotten one.

These British cyclists are just ridiculous this year.

Also it's great to see Bradley Wiggins sitting around drinking while watching the velodrome action. He was so happy he stuck to the roads this year, despite all his success indoors in the past.

As for the high jump stuff, yeah, in high jump and pole vault you keep jumping until you fail three consecutive jumps. Pretty common to have one or two people jumping for a while after the rest of the pack have failed, especially in multiple discipline events like the Heptathlon where different competitors have different strengths.

Late edit: Murray v Djokovic is some of the best tennis of the year so far. Absolutely fantastic.

And I was hoping to get to the shop before it got dark...

About the tennis:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also I don't like how the countried are being ranked. Currently the method that they're being ranked is first by number of golds, then number of silvers, then number of bronzes. There's not a hint of weighting the medals. Not only does this mean the Britain (at 8/6/8) is behind Korea (at 9/2/5), but shockingly Russia, with the third highest number of total medals, 23 (3/12/8) is currently in tenth place, just behind Kazakhstan with only four (4/0/0).
