Woohoo!  Go North Korea!  The Glorious Leaders watch from above!

This weightlifting thing is really gross.  This is obviously not something human beings were meant to do, every time somebody lifts a weight it looks like his body's about to just blow apart.

It's like NASCAR racing, half the audience is just waiting for the horrible accident to occur.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I happened to catch some women's weightlifting the other day, and dear gods. These women are lighter than me, and they are lifting almost three times my body weight. :o
And I finally managed to watch some boxing last night; that was very entertaining.

Olympic boxing is very cool, when the refs aren't being incompetent (which is always).

Edit: ok, that's not fair, but still, I've seen a lot of bad reffing.

Don't worry they cannot actually bench press you. How weight lifting works is very scientific but suffice it to say it is a skill as much as a show of strength.

I love how China and the US both have 17, but China has 9 golds while the US has 5.

I know right? Also, whats pretty amazing is that the DPRK is even in the top 5 in terms of gold medals. However, knowing North Korea, they've probably propaganda'ed their people into thinking they've won already.

Hey, just wait until volleyball and basketball are finished :D

Or maybe not, who knows. One thing I've noticed is that either Phelps has lost his touch, or everyone else got much better. Dude didn't even get a medal at his event (400m medley), and his team only got a silver in the 4x100m freestyle.
In good news, one of the American women not only got a gold in 100m butterfly, but broke the world record at the same time.

Didn't one of her swimming caps come off during the race? And she still won missing a piece of equipment? Impressive.

Dunno. I came in late and only saw the outcome. If true, that's mighty impressive considering that her hair must have created some drag.

I also heard swimmers actually wear two caps, one for their hair and another to cover their goggle straps or something, so it probably wasn't anything too bad.

Watching GB actually win a volleyball match last night until the small hours was a bad idea with hindsight. Though thier story is awesome...

They nhad thier funding totally cut for some reason back in 2010. Since thin they have begged, borrowed and stolen £250,000 to fund 2 years of squad development, purchasing an old fire station to use as a training base. Last night they mnaged to beat a team 50 odd places above them in the world rankings (GB are down in the high 60's as they cant afford to travel to high profile competitions, and thier defeated opponents Algeria (yea, I know, hardly Brazil or the US...) are hovering around the low 20's) by 3 sets to 2 in a tight and enthralling contest.

As for boxing, it has annoyed me that the scores arent shown live on TV anymore. The justificion for this is that often the judges awarded points that could clearly be seen on TV to be wrong, making them look incompetent, and fighters with leads would often fight safe ruining matches. It did amuse me to find that boxing referees are tested with a breathalizer for alcohol...

Nobody should be suprised that the US and China dominate at this stage - most of the medals so far are in minority sports, where the money (for the US) and sheer number of potential competitors (for China) tends to win out, apart from in a small number of cases where unusual "national sports" apply, especially for asian and eastern european nations.

Fair old bit of controvercy yesterday though - Japan being sore loosers after dropping to fourth after a shoddy last rotation (one fall and a failed dismount) in mens team gymnastics forced a review, which controversially bumped them up 2 places at the expense of GB and Ukraine. A South Korean fencer staged a sit in over what she considered a bad decision at the end of her bout, and looked like a massive spoilt child. Oh, and while the world was stunned at the 16 yr old Chinese swimming sensation, a US coach accused her of doping. That should pan out in an entertaining manner.

Weightlifting injuries? I strongly reccomend you dont go on YouTube looking for them - various hernia's, bone breaks and prolapses are not fun to see.

Wow, that turned into a text wall quite easily didnt it?

Hey, no worries, more discussion is good! Bring on the walls of text!

Anyways, you should have seen the Australian programme today. Since the live footage takes place from 6PM-6AM (more or less) here due to timezones, they've been replaying various things all day, and of course Snell's (I should really remember her first name) amazing goal in women's basketball was on high rotation.
Problem is, the commentators are shouting something about 'snatching victory' after it happens, so whenever they replay that bit they have to clarify that it did not, infact, claim a victory. ::)

Looking fowards to seeing what sports are shown tonight. At the moment it's mostly Aquatic Centre events.

So far this morning I have been watching more archery, weightlifting (central asians age good at this it seems), a bit more swimming and some 3 day eventing, where GB have royalty in the team (Princess Zara Phillips/Tindall (?surname? - married to Mike Tindall, rugby player), the Queens granddaughter and 14th or so in line to the throne). The top 4 in the 3 day eventing are tight as anything and it will be going down to the wire.

Yea that shot was remarkable - apparently its the first game Australia have lost since the late 90's when the USA put one on you.
