Is meta-discussion about sponsorship allowed? Because I'm really excited for McDonald's Presents the Olympic Games.

You talking about the prizes they offer? Because I went there earlier today and won a free smoothie :P

Hmm, I don't think it starts on Aus television for a couple more days... Although I could be wrong.

I'll probably watch it! Hopefully I can remember to turn the TV on at the right time. Might need to get a guide. :P

When do the opening ceremonies begin, London time? I'd like to try and watch them live, they're only 8 hours ahead of me :P

9pm local time.

When is the speed walking?
The men's 20km is on the Saturday 4th August, with the 50km and the women's 20km the following Saturday.

The BBC website has a fairly good schedule if anybody's interested.

The highlight tomorrow is probably the men's cycling road race with the UK's Mark Cavendish having a great chance, especially after winning the final stage of the Tour de France last weekend, a stage he's won four years in a row.

I think i know why China has such crazy medal rates.
Apparantly parents send their 3 year old kids to an ACADEMY to F*CKING TRAIN and miss their entire youth :x.

I'm not really a tour de france expert, but the last stage is more of a "ending ceremony" then an actual stage.
Wiggins won the entire tour the france, but again, i'm not an expert so i'm not sure if he's actually IN the olympic games.

Either way, i'll be supporting for Tom Boonen (despite his doping use a few years ago.)

The final stage rarely, if ever, makes a difference to the overall winner, but the sprint at the end is certainly competitive. L'Equipe recently named Cavendish the Tour de France's best sprinter of all time.

Wiggins will be supporting Cavendish in the road race, then going for the win himself in the time trial on Tuesday.

There is also the matter of China having the largest possible population sample to find super-athlete outliers in.

As much as I understand where you're coming from, this thread isn't really the place for that...

2. No meta-discussion about the Olympics itself as an institution. Yes, there's plenty of room for criticism about a bunch of rich, industrialized countries holding an athletic event that their superior training programs and advanced gear allow them to run away with. However, that criticism belongs in another thread, maybe the Chill Progressive thread. Likewise for grousing about how much of a pain in the ass/waste of money the Olympics are for the UK.

Also: Handball is an olympic sport now? :o I almost regret mocking those handball-playing weirdoes in highschool, now. Almost...
The sport I'm probably most looking foward to is boxing. As much as Olympic boxing is nowhere near as exciting as real boxing, since I lack cable TV it's the best I have access to. :P

The only olypmpic sport I'm interested in is ice skating, which means I have to wait for two years, which is kinda shitty as England is in a good timezone.

I saw a boxing match once (I forgot to turn the TV off) and the only thing I was thinking was: 'Nooo! Don't hurt him! Don't you see he is bleeding :('. I've never really cared about violence on TV, but for some reason I just can't stand watching boxing.

2 world records this morning, both in archery (qualifying round). Korean competitors scored a new record total score in both team and individual events.

Edit: Turns out the individual record has been set by an archer blind in one eye!

Arr, i'd call it invalid!

But seriously, that is epic. I dont know much about archery, but i guess depth sight can be really usefull for it.
Imagine if he had two good-working eyes.
