BBC commentator just cracked me up during the swimming.

Sun Yang of China won incredibly comfortably while destroying the world record by about 3 seconds, with a time of 14:31. The commentator was utterly dismayed that he didn't break the 14:30 mark. So the words as this man dominated the race and demonstrated he is safely the best in the world was "OH NO!"

Really? I would have said that the if anything the golds were being overvalued in the 3/2/1 system. I would have gone for something like 5/3/2, or 6/4/3. In many sports, the difference between the first place and the second place is so miniscule, the value of the medals should reflact that.

Looking at the history, there have been proposals of 5:3:1, 3:2:1 and 4:2:1. I think that the latter makes more sense and is more elegant. Would be interesting to see how that changes the results.


On tomorrows tennis final and Roger Federer, I'd recommend everyone reads David Foster Wallice's essay, Roger Federer as Religious Experience. And here is the point he talks about near the start.

Wow. With the Japanese swimmer ahead of him, his whole style just seemed to change from the other races I've seen him in. I don't usually find the swimming exciting, but that certainly was! A great finish to his career and all that.

If you have the ability, you have to get the mens Tennis final on infront of you. Murray and Federer are taking each other to peices with what is possibly the most outragoues shots ever. Murray is like some kind of demon, hitting agressive shots from everywhere and Federer is managing to return most of them with relative ease. Murray one set up at the moment.

Wish I could watch this live, because I imagine the crowd noise will be somewhere around rock concert levels.

If, on the other hand, Federer rallies from two sets down and comes back to win, the UK may well declare war on Switzerland.

9's coverage is annoying me right now. The Opals are fighting it out with Canada on the basketball court, in the 4th quarter by now, and I'm stuck watching gymnastics?! I thought all Australia's male gymnasts were out, anyway.
As much as I like to see events without Australians competing as well, I don't see why they're showing the bloody gymnastics over the business end of a basketball match. Argh.

With the semi-finals out of the way, I reckon it's going to be between Tyson Gay (lane 4 USA), Yohan Blake (lane 5 JAM), Justin Gatlin (lane 6 USA) and Usain Bolt (lane 7 JAM). Asafa Powell looked ok but way past his best, and Ryan Bailey is probably too inexperienced.

I going to call it Bolt, Blake then Gatlin, with a winning time of...  realistically 9.65. (But fingers crossed for 9.49 or less!)

I just hope there's no false starts.

Good luck, Tyson Gay! He's been training like crazy, and actually beat a couple of Bolt's times from last year during his season, I believe. I think he's got a shot, at least. (Though in a race that fast, a single misstep could cost anybody the race.)
