Koreans are totes badasses when it comes to archery. Helps that it's the traditional national sport (well, after Starcraft).

So since this is happening in my own town I just had to post in this thread. Without the breaking any of the rules, here's a bit of moaning about the Olympics (not the institution, the event that happens where you live) and some personal (good) Olympic experience. Basically, we've got two weeks of massive travel disruption (Transport for London even has these cute little posters up saying "During the Olympics it may be quicker to walk that take the Tube" and "Why not work from home during the Olympics"), so I'm not going to be going more than walking distance from where I live. I'll also be watching it on TV, despite the fact that I can see one of the stadiums (stadia?) from my house and it's within walking distance. Because if you actually wanted tickets to anything (let alone the good stuff that everyone wants to see, like the opening ceremony or the running) you had to be either rich and very lucky (the public lottery thingy for tickets) or have corporate connections (they got all the good tickets). Not to mention all the Olympic stuff we've been building in parts of London that are so poor they are closing schools hospitals and libraries.

That's all your fairly standard Londoner's Olympic moaning, so I'll throw in my fun personal experience. On Wednesday the Torch was coming through my area (it actually passed about 100 yards form my house) and I saw it when I went out to get cigarettes. Yay! the eternal fire of Olympus was observed by my eyes! It did take me about 40 minutes to get my smokes though, as opposed to the normal 10 (Dammit, and I said I was done complaining). Anyway, that's enough of that, I'll post again if there's anything interesting like a terror attack or riot.

Oh, and the Olympic village, while having every other mod con, lacks any form of air conditioning. And we are experiencing a "go outside and be instantly covered in sweat and pollution" heatwave.

Heh...I got a chance to see the torch in '96, when it was making the rounds prior to the Atlanta games. Ran down the street next to my apartment.

As far as Im Dong-hyun (the legally blind South Korean who broke his own world record at archery during qualifiers)...just think how demoralizing that has to be for all the other archers. I can hear the trainers now..."A blind Korean could shoot better than you do!"  :P

The final stage rarely, if ever, makes a difference to the overall winner, but the sprint at the end is certainly competitive. L'Equipe recently named Cavendish the Tour de France's best sprinter of all time.
His sprint to victory in the third last stage was amazing too.  He could've probably won the sprinting competition if his team hadn't been focused on securing a win for Wiggins.  This'll hopefully be a good chance for him to win (since in the last olympics he was actually the only person on the British cycling team who didn't manage to get a medal).

If its one thing we (GB that is) will pretty certainly win medals in, it will be the cycling. GB's cycling team is quite frankly phenomenal in terms of strength and depth in pretty much all events for both genders from Road Race to BMX and everything inbetween (Chris Hoy, Nicole Cook, Shaznae Reed, Wiggins, Cavendish, Victoria Pendleton...). Even getting into the team is some kind of achievement TBH. This is all down to how the funding is based on performance though - a good crop of athletes wins something, gets more funding as a result, and positive feedback kicks in.

Did I miss archery?! FUUUUUU-

Ok, either my time zone knowledge is way off, or some events started before the opening ceremony. If the ceremony is at 9pm London time, then it shouldn't be for another two hours. Yet I'm watching a soccer match on TV and apparently world records have already been set. DAMN YOU, GREAT BRITAIN!

Football has to start before the ceremony, and this has been the norm for quite some time now. There simply isnt enough time nor viable venues to run the football tournaments in 16 days. As for archery, I can only assume that time pressure on the venue (Lords cricket ground) has been behind the timetabling.

Archery was just qualifier rounds. Yeah, I know...we're already kinda running afoul of Rule #3. But yes, a blind guy broke a world record in archery. Even better, he was the one who set the previous record. Somebody really needs to do a kickass martial arts flick about a blind archer.

Now that you mention it, I'm kinda surprised that there hasn't been one already.

If Im goes on to win gold in the individual event, I could see some Korean filmmaker doing one (or at the very least a biopic).

I kinda want to see fencing. No real reason why, I just like swords.
Don't blink.

I think i know why China has such crazy medal rates.
Apparantly parents send their 3 year old kids to an ACADEMY to F*CKING TRAIN and miss their entire youth :x.
Eh, different values. It's hard to explain, but I'll put it this way as a short explanation - if the parents didn't think this was the best thing to do, they wouldn't continue doing this generation after generation.
Also they then narrow it down from the hundreds of academies. Choosing the best of the home grown best.
Russia's approach is a novel one, they basically do mass scouting and if you show potential - you get trained.
