He did win the Tour de France mostly on the basis of his time trials being around 2 minutes faster than anyone else's, so it's not exactly a shocker.  Still, another excellent performance for a well deserved gold.  Here's to hoping GBR gets some more on the track cycling events.

I tend to think the simple naming priority goes to the simplest (lest specialist equipment required to have a recognisable match) sport that takes that name, with older forms taking priority when there are multiple types that require similar gear. For example, association football (or, if you want to be slangy, soccer) gets the football name because you only need a ball and something to act as a goal. Hell, you can play a full recognisable match using just five tin cans. Recognisable field hockey can be played with one stick each, a ball and a pair of 'goals'. I'd rank ice hockey alongside roller hockey using those criteria, even if it wins by being a little older.

Which is to say neh.

That's odd...I seem to remember watching ALL the Russians crash and burn on both the balance beam and the floor exercises.

By the time Raisman took the floor, it was pretty much a given that unless her exercise consisted of 25 consecutive faceplants, the US had gold. Granted, the commentators did everything they could to play it up, but I don't think NBC's editors did anything really blatant.

(But yes...in general, I'd like to see NBC's gymnastics commentators all catch a nasty case of laryngitis.)

Today has just been WOW. Twin trap skeet is something else. The accuracy and reactions are something else when the speed/direction/angle of the targets are considered.. The top 5 all hit 180 out of 200. Plenty of good stuff in the Velodrome too, with world records being smashed and multiple disqualifications for incorrect handovers in team races. Currently watching basketball - GB men struggling vs world number 2 Spain, before moving on to boxing, volleyball or some swimming...

The interview with the shooting champion was certainly interesting.  Apparently he lost his funding 4 years ago but continued with the help of a friendly Sheikh who he shot and played squash with, and managed to get back on the GB team.  He was definitely very cool out there today with a great combination of reflexes and precision.

I noticed during the walk of nations that there were a lot of older athletes in the crowd. I don't think I saw anyone in their 70s, but then again there were a lot of athletes out there.
