Spoiler: Image, controversial (click to show/hide)

Okay, so some person posted this image on facebook and got 21000 likes and 1200 comments, most of them Korean facebookers either cussing like wagondrivers or admonishing the first group to not do so.

Why's there a red circle around the two tips of the rapiers, and talk about 1 second, or unfair referees, or three attacks? :s

I believe that's an epee match.

Keep in mind i'm not a fencer and have no idea about the rules, but I think it's because of the round tips of the epees?

Monkeyhead, may I just say one thing? o.o

http://blog.sfgate.com/olympics/2012/07/30/fencing-controversy-forces-south-korean-to-sit-on-piste-for-ages-eventually-costs-her-medal/[/url]]Yet the appeal itself proved to be incredibly lengthy, and also contains a unique bylaw that requires Shin to remain on the piste throughout its duration.

... meaning, despite the fact that she might have indeed looked like a spoiled brat, it was required by Olympics regulations. So.. yeah, less of a sit-in, more of a "you sit there or we don't even look at your appeal". Apparently, leaving the piste means that you accept the ruling.

I don't have any more trustworthy links, though, sadly. Only a blog and some small internet news places.

Also, I noticed one of the captions on a site I went to said that she was escorted "physically" off the court, which sorta makes you think of big burly men forcing you off the piste, when later on it elaborates and says she hugged her coach and went off together. :S Word twisting? Though I'm not a native speaker, no matter how many years I've spoke English, so not quite sure.EDIT:NOPE, officials in suits did come and convince her off.

The reason the ruling was controversial is because the timer got stuck on the last second, so within "one second" the German competitor was able to finish her attack and was awarded a point.

Meanwhile, I still have no idea why there's a red circle around the tips of the swords.

17 year old aressted after abusing diver Tom Daley...

Tom Daley is the 18 yr old GB diver who came 4th in 10m syncro yesterday, and will be going in the 10m singles in the near future. After finishing 4th, someone subjected him to a barrage of abuse on Twitter, stating how his dad (who recently died of brain cancer) would be dissapointed. Wonder how the dad of the aressted teen now feels - what sort of chump abuses an olympian?

As for the Fencer - fair enough then, if its an accepted part of the sport. I have dug around and cant seem to find any information as to what the protest was about regarding the sword tips.

The sword used in Épée fencing is called the Épée. The sword used in foil fencing is called the foil. The sword used in saber fencing... Yeah :P

Honestly I have no idea why they've been circled though.

...That's ... astonishingly simple, actually. xD
Strangely, Chrome suggests "epee" is correct while "épée" isn't.

Meanwhile, on the picture, it's quite clear the Epee's are quite far apart at one second...
Yeah, this is one controversy.

I dont see where the controversy lies. Yes, she has every right to be pissed off at an odd rule (if there is a double hit time is rolled back to the nearest second, hence time going back to one second if there was a double hit inbetween one second and time out), but she cant complain about it being enforced. No doubt she would have no problem if the rules had worked in her favour (if she had scored a winning hit, or if time ran out - as the score was tied at 5-5, but she would have won if the scores were tied at time out due to the score before the extra time).

Horsies? Yes, its complicated, but for 2 of the 3 events its based on time with penalties added... I think. Cracking finish there too.

Edit: Wow, Judo is so harsh. A life of training, and top competitors can be eliminated instantly in seconds. No second chances there.

I watched most of that fencing match live. It was pretty chaotic and not very clear, but in the end I think this is how it worked out;

There was a double touch just as the clock hit 1 second, stopping the clock with 0.01 showing.
There was a second double touch immediately after the restart, with 0.01 still showing.
There was a third double touch, still with 0.01 showing. Commentators speculated the clock hadn't even had time to be started.
Before the match restarted, the clock went to 0.00 for some reason. A lot of people thought Shin had won (including her and her coach) but were stopped by the ref. At the time no explicit reason was given.
One second was put back on the clock. The timekeeping in fencing was pretty basic, so this was a full second, not the fraction remaining after the first two double touches.
When the match was restarted the German scored, although not as quickly as the first two double touches, taking a goodly amount of the final second to win.

This was when the SK coach started appealing. The ref rewarded the match despite the appeals. They had to file a (hand) written appeal on site, without leaving the arena. This was very involved and no-one knew what was going on. No-one was communicating with Shin during this while she was left in front of the crowd, utterly distraught.

Eventually one of the officials came on and told her (not overly sensitively) the appeal was rejected and tried to remove her. She refused to go and seemed to be looking for her coach for an explanation. It doesn't seem that she had had any other communication with anyone at this point, so didn't really know what was going on.

The official and another man (a senior member of the federation) came back. The first official seemed to threaten her with a yellow card, with the black disqualification card also being openly carried. The second man was more gentle and coaxed her out of the arena, back to her coach.

As for the details of the appeal, the explanation I heard from the commentators later was that after the third double touch (second in the final second) she had committed a technical infringement of some sort. The referee couldn't award the match on a foul, even if time had apparently expired, so added the second back onto the clock. I'm guessing that the image is an assessment of the alleged infringement, although I don't really see what it's about. It's hard to say if she did violate some rule or other, given no-one has stated what rule she broke and I don't exactly know the rules myself.

On the other hand, her opponent has said that the clock is always set to 1 second remaining after a hit in the final second and that she has fallen victim to this in the past. Thing is absolutely no-one else mentioned this rule and it wasn't the justification given.

The Japanese silver appeal, that seems fairly valid to me. The dismount was given as not a dismount at all, a penalty costing 0.5 points (as well as any points not scored during the dismount). Technically a dismount only requires you land on your feet. The Japanese gymnast slipped but did land on his feet even if he did so inelegantly. I believe they had a total of 0.7 or so added, so that's going from absolutely no dismount to an abysmal one. Even if he had been awarded no additional points, only getting rid of that 0.5 penalty would have put them back into second, and that penalty was certainly not valid.

And on the tiny weightlifters, the Beeb has a nice plot of athlete weights and heights. The bottom left is a mostly female gymnasts, a diver, then suddenly a weightlifter who took silver.

Woo, I am most like a sprinter - Mark Lewis-Francis. Flattering

Also, worth mentioning that world number 1's, World Cup winners, Euro champs and nation with the best club sides in the world (all at multiple age groups not just senior level) Spain have been eliminated from the football competition, blowing it wide open, though Brazil will take some beating.

Wow, Slalom Canoeists make it look easy to go uphill aginst the white water.

Yeah, the Ye Shiwen thing is looking like a big ol' "Don't talk when your mouth is full of fail" for the US coach.

He basically pulled a "I'm not saying it's doping....but it's totally doping." I particularly enjoyed this line:
Quote
“The one thing I will say is that history in our sport will tell you that every time we see something, and I will put quotation marks around this, 'unbelievable’, history shows us that it turns out later on there was doping involved.

So when people were saying that it was "unbelievable" that Michael Phelps could win 8 gold medals in Beijing....?  ???
(Admittedly, he was later caught toking some primo green after the Olympics, but I hardly think that's a performance-enhancing drug.)

And now that her drug test has come back clean, the speculation has changed to everything from genetic modification to bionics.  ::)
