Apparently the way to get rid of the night hag is to chisel a hole in a rock and sleep with it, or you could circle your bed with an iron knife. So there you go op.
Lol xD.

So, you know, I'm going to Hell for playing Dwarf Fortress and liking to read, among other things.
Please don't mistake my meaning, I don't intend to accuse or even suggest that all religious folk, or even all Christians, are like this.  But I can see how the idea can grow from a basic fallacy planted deep.

I understand your point, and i would like to confirm that this example is far from the biblical christianity, that is fanatics like these people.

I have seen some of their statements and they have nothing to do with the bible.

If Hindu chants are against your religious, surely Gregorian chants would be fine ;D
I get the joke, hehe ;D.

This thread was pretty enlightening to read.

I guess I too have had sleep paralysis at some point, maybe, although it came out a little different than most people here.

I was lying in bed, eyes closed and half asleep and I suddenly realized I couldn't sense my headboard. I couldn't feel the relative position of my body anymore, whether I was lying head first at the end of the bed or head toward the headboard (and on my pillows.) Instead of moving I somehow lingered in this weird place with no references, something like vertigo but not quite as I could still sense where I was, just not how I was...if that makes any sense. I kinda wanted to move, to get my spacial sense back, but wouldn't or couldn't.

After a certain point I started freaking out a little and snapped awake. It was definitely an interesting experience, to the point where I kind of tried to reach that same state of nowhere-ness consciously a few times, but never really got there.

How dare you laugh at the beliefs of my ancestors! ;)

I don't want to start a religious flame war, but how is that any less plausible than wishing upon a 2,000 year old Jewish zombie?

Oh hey, I used to have those "night terrors" that RedKing was describing. One involved me being upset over coins spilling out of a tin can. Yeah, I don't even know.

Over the years I've learned how to "waver" in between being awake and asleep. It feels weird and I can't do it forever, but it leads to some interesting sensory alterations. I've had it happen while listening to people talk on a video and launched straight into dreaming, extrapolating off of what I'm hearing while still being vaguely aware of the outside world. Unfortunately, that tends to distract me and sends me closer to actual sleeping, unless I realize that which shocks me into waking up fully.

I know this feeling, or something similair, its the same as when you wake up in a different bed than you are used to, such as if you wake up at your friends home, thinking oure in your own bed, then realising that you are actually slept over.

God hates sin, but God loves sinners, thats why he died for them. God doesn't hate homosexuals, but his opinion about homosexual acts is documented in Leviticus 18:22.

I see you're one of those particular sort of Christian who likes to follow certain bits of Leviticus/Deuteronomy but not others. Leviticus also makes a whole lot of other "opinions" clear that you almost certainly don't agree with, so why use that one as an example?

Doesn't Leviticus tell you to kill homosexuals? That's a bad place to get your "this is what god says" scripture from. There's better ones in the new testament that don't involve killing homosexuals. Or those that wear the wrong clothes.

Anyway, getting into a religious debate is not my cup of tea, but I'd be careful about citing old testament scriptures as a Christian. The old testament is full of vile things that most sects of Christianity renounce.

Leviticus tells you to kill a lot of people for a lot of reasons, and also some stuff about slavery and women that wouldn't go over well with most people. Of course, I'm not saying those are a modern part of Christianity or Judaism at all, just that using Leviticus as a justification for something is kind of flimsy in light of all the other stuff in there that isn't followed anymore.

Okay so moving on from religion, I have never had any such sleep paralysis "event".

To be honest... I'm kind of jealous

Yeah, they're very unpleasant to have, but I'm also glad I've had them, because I like having experienced weird modes of consciousness. Of course, I'd be singing a different tune if I had them often enough for them to become an actual problem.

Your mind is actually at it's most creative point while you are wavering between sleeping and wakefulness (which is one of the reasons why night terrors can be so horrifying!). Several inventors (the most famous being Thomas Edison) actually have taken advantage of this fact to help them brainstorm. For example Edison sat in his chair while holding a big rock with a metal pan between his feet. Then whenever he would fall asleep all of the way the rock would fall into the pan and wake him up, letting him stay in that sort of "trance" state for long periods of time while he was thinking.

And all of your religious talkers in here, there's a thread for that up in the normal General discussion forum, so if you want to discuss religion (except as it may apply to night terrors) take it there please. So out, out, all of you demons, demigods, and deacons. Take it where it belongs and leave this thread unless you have something relevant! :P

I heard a similar tale about Salvador Dali. He said he would stay awake for a week, then sit in front of a canvas holding a key or spoon or something that he could drop when he fell asleep from being crazy Salvador Dali and not sleeping for weeks on a regular basis. He said he painted what he saw when he was awakened.

Of course, Dali was Dali. He could have been knowingly making it all up or utterly delusional. You never really know when it comes to things about Dali.

hello. ptw. but also, i'd like to comment that there are ways to induce sleep paralysis, if you guys want to try

you want to lie down on your back, preferably after you had some good sleep so you're not sleepy enough to fall asleep of boredom, then you relax your body and empty you mind. focusing on your respiration often helps, set a regular, comfortable rhythm and stay with it. then you stand very still. force yourself not to move, while keeping your muscles relaxed and limp. after a few minutes you'll be assaulted by urges to twitch and change position, deny and ignore these. the urges will get stronger and stronger, but after some time, 20 to 30 minutes maybe, you'll get a fuzzy *wave*(?) traversing your body as paralysis sets in, this may last a few seconds and is very noticeable, after it sets, you're on the other side.
i'd recommend against doing it after having read this thread as there has been a lot of terrifying situations described that may excite your imagination in the wrong way. put some oniric instrumental music instead, nothing too distracting, just to set a idilyc mood
