High pitched sound from monitor.
« on: July 24, 2012, 11:53:18 am »

Sometimes, whenever I am viewing any screen with I'd say at least 50% white, my monitor starts giving out this high pitched sound that fills the room and even bleeds out into the neighboring room. It's incredibly annoying and it's worrying me if it's giving out some sort of radiation that may once day give me superpowers.

Since I don't want the government knocking on my doors to extract my sciences to benefit all mankind. I'd like to get rid of this sound. Any ideas?

Someone else with the same problem and some offered ideas here.

I love how your description is akin that of a horror scene.

"The screen turns part white, giving a high pitched sound that fills the room and bleeds through the walls. It is worrying"

Seems to be a normal problem for aging monitors and TVs then... Unless I do something with lowering refresh rate I'll have to live with it I guess.

I had my last monitor burst into flames after this happened. But I'm pretty sure that was something else entirely; but don't leave it on alone just in case. Mine was an old box monitor, fyi, not too sure if the thinner monitors can ever burst into flames like the older ones. Don't plan on finding out; carrying sprinting with a melting flaming monitor out of my house was very alarming.

at most you blow out the motherboard on the back of the monitor and the lcd leaks out a bit but nothing hazardous.

If it's a CRT monitor (which it sounds like it) then it's probably about time you replaced it. You'll earn the value back in electricity cost anyway, as CRTs weren't very efficient, and unless you have an exceptionally good CRT you'll get better picture quality from a modern flat panel display.

Agreed. Also there is the simple fact that in general it's better to dispose of CRT monitors before they break completely rather then after. X-ray radiation, poisonous toxins such as cadmium and lead, and shards of flying glass are not something you want to deal with, and while they don't have to happen every time a monitor fails, it's better to be safe then sorry.

I had an LCD monitor do that after I overclocked the refresh rate on it beyond "suggested" levels.

Putting paper (books) on top of the heat vent of a monitor which may or may not be working properly (possible sparks when it dies) is a great way to cause fire.

I'd advise not doing what Funk just suggested.

Don't be alarmed, not everyone can hear that high pitched sound. It is just the screams of the damned orphan souls used to power modern technology.
