How can I increase Embark Points and Skill Points?
« on: July 23, 2012, 12:09:24 pm »

Like it says on the tin, how can I increase these things?  I know I can increase the amount of available Embark Points by editing world_gen, but what about increase the number of available Skill Points pre-embark?  Ten skill points only go so far, you know.

Also, about world_gen, does that file refer to the advanced world generation option, or to world generation in general?  Do I need to increase the number of Embark Points under each title in the world_gen file?

EDIT: I'm using v0.34.11, also known as DF2012.

Holy this is the third thread that has popped up on this matter that I've seen so far.

Modding cannot alter Embark Points, Adventurer Points, or Skill Point Allowance.

You can Mem Hack to change those values by using external programs like:
Art Money
T-Search
or
Cheat Engine

These 3 I know of and used/use (I switch between them all) Also "DFhack" on these fourms have something close that you want
Sorry if this is a but curt/rude but.. :P this has been asked several times already.

I might as well put this question into the Modder's Resource under the FAQs

EDIT:
Ok modding can increase Embark Points in a clunky way, by making a creature/material have a (-) value

I'm pretty familiar with cheat engine, but I have an older version. You're not going to instantly pick it up and know how to do everything, but it's not hard to use.

Under advanced parameters, I found embark points, you can increase and decrease these when you generate a world. When you start a fortress. You will have these points. Hope this helps.

I would say
Art Money is the easiest
then
Cheat Engine
then
T-Search

I use T-Search alot, but I think Cheat engine has more functions
It comes down to what you feel is more your cup of tea

You can change embark points by creating a set of custom worldgen settings in data/init/world_gen.txt, setting a higher EMBARK_POINTS value and then generating a new world with the custom settings

Try re-reading the orignal post:

To properly answer the question: changing the Skill limit can only be accomplished using memory hacking.

Also, about world_gen, does that file refer to the advanced world generation option, or to world generation in general?  Do I need to increase the number of Embark Points under each title in the world_gen file?
You only need to change whichever one you're using. In fact, if you're doing an Advanced worldgen, you can just (e)dit the worldgen settings directly within DF (which has the added bonus of allowing you to not save the changes to disk and mess up further embarks).

Sorry to tell you that all the mem hack methods are alot more work intensive in the end then just modding the Raws...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Put that bad boy in the creature_standard.txt raw and voila you have no cap to skills or attributes and no rusting of good ol'e skills and you get them x5 as fast.
If you read in this spoiler you can see where to change the min and max of the skills also, left is the lowest the skill can be and the right is the highest. Do not mess with the skill rate tag unless you know what you are doing.

On the other one, you have to go to adv world gen to change the embark points, easy as that!

EDIT: Forgot to mention you have to put it under the creature header in the file if you just put it any old place you will not see the effects. You also have to gen a new world after adding this fun tag.

If you want it to, yes.

EX:[PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:1250:1500:1750:2000:2500:3000:5000]

TO:[PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000:5000]

Or:[PHYS_ATT_RANGE:STRENGTH:5000:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE]

EDIT:Just add [SKILL_RATES:5000:NONE:NONE:NONE] and they gain skills at x50 the rate, and you can actually add these tags to any creature raw you want under and creature.

But that was never the OP's question?
He wanted Embark Points and Skill points lol.

Learning and gaining stuff uber fast is alright. But in the end when you are fighting the same race, you both become legends in the first few swipes at each other.

Or everyone you fight is on roids

Altho great for those that want a caste/creature that can power learn/grow

True, all depends on what your goals are. Runesmith is a great for just changing one Dwarf, though they haven't updated it to the newest version yet, I think they are on 31.25 atm that is the perfect solution if you don't mind using an older version .

EDIT: It is a DFhack type thing so it does all the mem hacks fer ya. You could also create a custom race in your are going to adv mode with it and make is so it only generate as an outsider, I find doing mem hacks to be work intensive unless you make a "trainer" of sorts and as I said Runesmith is not working on the current version so that path is locked to me.
