What would you tell a first time adventurer?
« on: July 23, 2012, 12:27:56 am »

I've played Dwarf Fortress mode a little bit but the adventure aspect of this huge world sounds more appealing to me, but the times i've tried I had no idea what I was doing or what I was supposed to be doing..

Im just curious if there are things you wish you had known when you first started playing? All hints, tips and tricks well appreciated thanks!

To your in game adventurer 'You're doomed.'

To you, You're DOOMED.

And sharp rocks are 1d+9000 godspears of luck. Use them likewise. If something even looks like there is a chance of hell being brought down upon you, it probably will be, so act like every boss is a proper boss. I've had godlike adventurers die to one too many kobolds.

Lastly... avoid crossbowmen. Seriously. They're really railgunmen in disguise.

And don't forget http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Adventure_mode_quick_start

Sneak everywhere and armour your limbs. Quests that send you into sewers will be infuriating, but most sewer-related targets will be hanging out in sewer outlets in the nearby river.

To an ingame adventurer, no matter peasant, hero or demigod: "Don't do this. You WILL die."

To you: A trick that is INVALUABLE is wearing armor, then going out into the wilderness and wrestle (Grab body part x with body part y) a small critter like a turkey or a rabbit or something and let it attack you. Wait for a few days and you will be Legendary in shield-using. Now drop your shieldwall and let the animal whale on your armor for a few days, and BAM! Legendary armor user, which means you get no speed decrease from wearing heavy armor. I also recommend 1: Getting a crutch, 2: Finding a bridge over a river (nonfrozen) and 3: Swim in the river, while using the crutch, going under the bridge for short perods of time. You'll find your Toughness attribute has rapidly increased. That is if you mind grinding.

I've played Fortress mode 'cause I'm awesome but I'd rather a**r*** a troll in Adventure Mode, but the times I've tried, I've come to realize that I'm a virgin when it comes to stuff like this..

I'm just curious if there are things you wish you had known when you first started playing. All hints, tips and tricks are well appreciated. Thanks!!!

Edited to make it more Dwarven. Also, to fix grammatical mistakes.

Anyway, I wish I knew that I wasn't supposed to sleep outside.

P.S.- The comment "a**r*** a troll" was a figure of speech meant to signify the troll being at the player's mercy due to the player's high troll killing skills.

To adventurer: You like riding ponies?  These horses will enjoy teabagging your dented, broken corpse.

Press E to drink the blood covering on your boots.
Press G to pick up the blood and T to throw railgun blood at the enemy.

Anything with hooves, keep your distance.
It WILL crush your puny skull.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

If you're fighting a horse, aim for the spine first.

If it has hooves, odds are it will be a bitch to kill. If you must, knock it out and slash the throat with that copper dagger.

Avoid ANYTHING undead. It will BREAK YOU with it's bare hands. And laugh. Throw sharp stones at everything else. Get life insurance. FAST.
