Zombies gain a buff based on how many other zombies are nearby, making them perhaps faster or stronger. This would encourage "horde" like behaviour.
Great idea!

About the map, perhaps it could remain static, but the locations of loot objects and other objectives are random?
The loot is already random; when you search a container you pick a random card from the deck. Rearranging the containers themselves wouldn't add much to the randomness, so I think the map will be totally consistent.

Perhaps there could be some sort of website where players can share maps and cards they've made?
That would be awesome. For now if anybody makes their own map, cards, or other art they can just post the images on this thread.

Are they Romero zombies or Left 4 Dead zombies? If they are option number 2 then how about eventual mutations after eating enough humans or zombies.

Okay fine, maybe I'm too lazy to find something to put here.

I suggest the zombies getting a little tougher as time goes on as well. Just to keep the survivors on their toes.

These are classic brain-dead shambling zombies (although they can move quite quickly in hordes). I don't think they will have any crazy mutations like L4D, but I do like the idea of them getting rewarded for eating things (beyond being able to stay alive longer). If you have any suggestions of specific bonuses that would be nice.

I like that idea, but I can't really think of any specific ways to empower the zombies besides making them faster and stronger. I don't really want to just give them more speed and attack power as I think the game is already in the zombies' favor (especially if they all get together in a big horde).

If they kill a human but do not eat it, which would imply that they have had plenty of food, let the zombie respawn as it instantly on it's death instead of waiting the 3 days.

The seems imbalanced. 15 extra turns is a lot more valuable then possibly saving 3.

The problem with that is that the game world will contain buildings and other specific architecture. Freely arranged walls and the like would make for a nonsensical world.
maybe have building tiles that are, for example 6x6 blocks, but only have the walls ( doors would be empty space? or printed on the piece with the rest of the walls?) so the space inside could be rearanged freely, but the walls would be the same every time.

I think as of now that we will have one consistent board, but that may be subject to change later. I think the board generation is random enough seeing as how all containers are equal and the stuff survivors find in them is completely randomized. Also does anyone have any ideas for how a morale system would work for the survivors? I was thinking that things like being with other survivors, not being hungry, having a gun, having a cat, and other things like that would enhance the morale of a survivor. Ways to decrease morale would be things like eating dog food, being alone, being hungry, etc. My only problem is that I don't know what effect morale would actually have on a survivor. I don't really want them to just be faster/stronger like the zombies but they should still get some bonus.

My idea was that it would be used if the zombie killed a survivor from a group - increase the chance of killing a survivor and getting closer to winning, at the cost of not necessarily getting the extra time.  However, I forgot that the humans reanimate by themselves.

quick question. Will the characters (both zombies and survivors) start in the same spots each time, or will it be something along the lines of everyone starts on an edge of the map, anywhere the roads touch the end, sort of deal?

edit: will zombies start in the town, if not at the edge?

I think that the survivors should start off in beds or vehicles around the map and that zombies should just spawn on the edges of it as they please.

Well first, based on the idea of zombies getting a buff, imo both zombies and survivors should get buffs as the game progresses. Survivors can 'create' items, while zombies can 'mutate.'

The creation has so much possibility, you could do an improv. system where players take random stuff they find and put it together into something usable.(car-bumper sword anyone?)
Think loot cards of respective classes. As in, say a player destroys a car in search of usable parts, they draw a card from the 'vehicle' card deck. Then, the rest of the parts are too destroyed/aged/whatever to be usable. You could even include a part upgrade system where players sharpen the metal(or whatever respective action there is) from that car bumper.

Then for the zombies mutation system:
As zombies are exposed to more and more of the disease(or whatever) that caused the initial sickness(from eating, be it survivor corpses or found dead animals or something else) they either mutate(system 1) or upgrade(system 2)
I don't mean for both system 1 and 2 to both be used, they're both separate ideas.

System 1: Zombies pick a card out of the mutation deck, they could end up loosing a body part, or get overpowered corrosion spit, or screech to buff nearby zombies with +move and +attack. This could totally alter how a zombie plays inorder to better the zombie faction as a whole.

System 2: Zombies accumulate 'upgrade points' and they can save points for a good upgrade(s), or spend the points on cheap upgrades. This would lead to early on decision making and tactic planning(I.E who does what) This would lead to a more, zombie rpg feel though.

Also I wanted to say, zombies could 'ladder' to basically teleport fellow zombies, unless I read it wrong. Assuming a zombie next to another zombie gets an additional point, then zombies could sort of do this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyways, hope you like my ideas and sorry for such a long post.

a while ago I had been working on a game with zombies, and I realized that with some work, these could be used in the game, if you like.

Well if it's an actual board game I don't think I could use those. However, I did have the idea of running this as a forum game, so I will use them for that if I ever get around to it and get all the rules sorted. Thanks for posting anyway!

I don't want the survivors to get extra buffs as the game goes on; I want the game to get much harder for them as things progress. Their only boosts as of now will be the items they find. I might add a skill system somehow though. As for you intensive crafting system, I like the idea but it's a bit too complicated for this sort of game. I might add a crafting system that's much more simplistic though. The zombie ladder thing shouldn't be possible. I might have written it incorrectly in the rules, but the zombie's horde movement boost only is granted at the start of its turn, so moving next to another zombie doesn't give you a speed boost. I do like the zombie mutations though and I will implement stuff like super human strength to rip through walls and barricades, projectile vomiting which carries the virus, and the ability to move quickly.
