I am not saying katana is uncommon.  I am saying that dai-katana is uncommon and the affix dai- does not tell a westerner anything useful.  Meanwhile if you called it a nodachi  there is at least a chance that someone has heard it and knows what it means as sasaki kojiro used a nodachi in what is arguably the most famous sword duel of all time in his fight with miyamoto musashi.

Dai-katana means far more to me than nodachi. Pretty much nobody in the western world has heard of Miyamoto Musashi except for real samurai buffs, who would know what dai-katana are anyway.

I lost you at "nobody knows musashi" because whether you are into video games, action movies, martial arts, literature or Japan, odds are good that you have been exposed to musashi's legend in some form or another.  I digress though, I didn't have any idea what a dai-katana was when I saw it in this game, and I am both a huge weaboo and an amateur Japanese language student.  Yes, it is a katana but what kind of katana?  Is it big, small, double-bladed etc.  I had to look through the raws and check the edge size to figure out what it was.  However, it seems I am in the minority and just making myself look like a nerd so forget it.

Yes, it does refer to a great-sword.

I'm sure you're right that "nodachi" is the more correct name, and I would believe you if you say that "dai-katana" is sort of a americanized, possibly incorrect to render it.  But, I would have bet it was the more familiar term to western gamers, for example,
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Akaviri_Dai-Katana

I would be happy either way.  But anyway, the weapon actually comes from one of Meph's files :)

Big. Dai-katana means big katana, though in pretty broken Japanese.

I know sweet FA about katanas, except that it always seems really really odd to me for my Orcs to be charging into battle in the lamaller leather armour made from the skin and bones of previous enemies to then be using something like a Katana instead of their makeshift clubs, blades and ironbone warclaws.

Then use the primitive weapons! Personally I prefer to play the Orcs as a mix between Feudal Japan, Mongols and the Aztecs/Mayans/Inca. Noble Savage and all that.

The use of "katana" is meant to evoke the idea of a handcrafted blade with a different combat style than a conventional shortsword/scimitar, and superior metallurgical properties.  Whether to picture it as having the specific form of a japanese sword, or some form unique to orcish artisans, I'll leave up to the player.

If you don't picture your orcs having artisan blade crafting at all, it's fine, just don't build the damasc forge :)

If anyone happens to be in the mood for some wikiing, I templated a new page at
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Masterwork:Orcish_items

Otherwise I'll get around to filling it sooner or later

Embarked, entered the preparation screen...

One of my Orcs likes arsenic fumes!
Another likes acid and a third likes forts.
This would be excellent for someone who likes a roleplay, or to turn their forts into a story.  Here's hoping being an amateur doesn't get this bunch of misfits killed!
Half are Uruks, and half are castless...
Thanks in advance for your work bringing this mod to me!

Three Uruks sounds like a pretty solid start!  Good luck! :)

I never noticed this but I was very surprised to see orcs have tails. Are your orcs more reptile like rather than human?

Personally I don't picture them with tails, except for the Snaga and maybe the Olog.

Well, to be honest when I originally started, the core "Orc" caste were just a copy of the body plan of the existing Orc in the Masterwork raws, and the others are permutations on that.  And the MDF Orc has a tail :D

I always pictured it as apelike, not reptile like.

@Gamerlord,
It's a valid point.  Although, i just learned how to do caste level body plans recently :)
