What to do What to Do
« on: July 20, 2012, 04:49:50 pm »

Hello all i'm in a bit of a bind, i've got a healthy little fortress of 98 people, i don't have any coal so i've been trying to get a pump stack up from the magma, i've got my military completely fitted out in iron armor and steel weapons thanks to imports. I've save scummed twice, once after a zombie dragon attack and again after 8 coblin ambush parties arrived all at once.... with predictable results, i;m swimming in crafts, food, and booze howeveri have a massive unemployment problem, almost half my fortress is unemployed with anything, just milling in my grand arena/dinign room so i'm wondering, what should i do to get hte little buggers working?

Turn them into miners, get them to dig out almost an entire z-level, then make them militia. Militia armed with picks are scary SOB's.

Sounds like Megaproject time.
Get all the little buggers to build a grand monument, or if you want, some impenetrable defenses.
Something like a wall for your Marksdwarves to shoot from, a giant block that you crush enemies with, whatever.
Also, you got sieged by Coblins? Is that a mod?

-_- Typo and it wasn't a siege, it was an ambush, 8 arrived all at once, slaughtered the elven cravan then most of my dwarves. I was being sieged by bat people at the time though so meh. I'm using the mastwerwork mod, as for defences i'm workign on that already with a large tower with fortification "windows" Here and there, this tower is the size of all of my existing fortifications as well. It's built on top of it all.

Still megaproject sounds like fun, i think i may go fir it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's what I'd do. Though I'd probably make them all soldiers AND masons/farmers. But not everyone's like that I guess.

Make fifty buckets and designate many, many ponds. Preferably the pond zones should be useful for something.

Moat filled by pond zones.

Though me, I'd start building a keep above the fort. A massive block wall, going up a couple z, then roof it over with a wall. Carve the walls into fortifications for archers.

Or start digging for magma mines.

Build 40 pumps with no use and let your idling dwarfs pumping air. This way they are busy and train their attributes/stats

Smothe and engrave EVERYTHING, including the entire mountain wall if you have one and all the caves!
