Apperance of cave creatures
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:30:08 pm »

Alright, so I'm currently working on the last few ASCII creatures for my Graphic Set (see signature), and I'm having trouble with visualizing some of the creatures.

Namely, I have no idea what a Pond grabber, a Grimeling, and a Sea Monster are supposed to look like.
I mean, I can gather what features the pond grabber and the Sea Monster have, but how are they attached to what kind of body? And I'm totally lost as to what to do with the Grimeling.
Others have a pretty sketchy description as well, but for the most part I can sort of imagine something. Just for clarification, though:

-The Draltha is something like a "underground Giraffe" that has a physical appearance similar to a sauropod, right?
-Drunian looks like a dog with the head of a man.
-Crundles have one pair of horns.
-A Manera is basically a head with 4 arms

A crayon drawing, a discussion thread like there is for the Beak dog, your own artistic rendition or just an opinion as to what features would you help identify the creatures would all be very helpful.
Thanks!

Here are some examples of what I have:

Gorlak, cave blob/flesh ball
Rutherer (not final), Giant Earth Worm

More images are in the thread linked in the signature, if you're curious.

Also, before you ask, an explanation for the style:
I prefer the simplicity and consistency of ASCII-like tilesets and there were no creature graphics that fit that look.
My creature graphics use the letters they get assigned by the game as base (usually) and add distinctive features of the creatures to make it easier to identify them. They only have one color - the one the letter uses by default.

The raws can help you out here.

I don't know about the others, but pond grabbers Are like octopi with beaks and 4 tentacles. I should know, since i am swimming in them. May be slightly unlike that but general idea.

Ah, rereading my OP, I forgot: I did look at the raws, but they were only helpful to some degree with these creatures.

Great! That helps a lot. It didn't occur to me to compare them to Octopi. Now I have a pretty clear image in my head. Thank you.

Try Genning them in arena andhaving a skilled axemen give you a lesson in biology. Odds are it'll tell you something. Then have them tear something apart for a better understanding.

Grimelings are humanoids made of weeds, like seaweed or something.

Sea Monsters are umm.... well they have a head, a body, crab pincers on their upper body, fins on their lower body, 6 tentacles, two eye stalks, and four eyes. Use you're own imagination on that one.

This is a pretty nice picture for what I'd imagine grimelings look like (yes, stolen straight from Avatar: TLA).

Sounds like a chuul with rickets wearing an eye of the deep beholderkin as a hat.

Yeah, I learned that when I had a pond grabber swim next to the current water source, then promptly slaughter everyone who didn't run away first.

It also helps cause they injure parts that you wouldn't know about otherwise, like fingers on humans.

Thanks everyone! I completed all creature graphics for now. The Sea Monster is still not as good as I'd like it, but for now I just want to release a complete graphic set before I lose motivation or don't have enough time anymore. I can revise single creatures later.

If you're curious what they look like, check out the thread on the modding forum or look here
