*pokes head in, sees thread so far off the rails that it's actually changed into a horsecart, ducks back out again*
There's this tendency around here to horribly derail any thread that could be controversial.  Can't have any relevant discussion going on now.

I find this discussion, the discussion about knights and how they fight, a very intresting one.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

And so a discussion about a shooting at the Dark Knight Returns turns into a discussion about *actual* knights, dark or otherwise.

Only on Bay 12.

Well, it kinda went like this:

Original thread --> Second amendement(gun law in America or something) --> Origin of gun law in America--> Militias and their importance in America's early army--> Effectivity of militieas --> Battle of the Gulden Spurs ---> Knights ---> Knight's armour

Something like that, I think.

No, my gulden spurs post didnt really change anything It was just disproving that 10 knights can take on 1000 peasants. (well, not always)

Not really, I just mentioned a law about longbows in passing and suddenly it was every medievel weapons discussion (except mercifully the katana one).

All this despite stopping myself derailing the whole thing into a gun law debate a dozen pages ago.

Actually as time went on the value of militia went up. While in the medieval times a team of 10 mounted knights could defeat a force 100 times

You think ten mounted knights could beat a thousand peasants?  If they're in a 10-wide hallway maybe but I think you're underestimating the weight of sheer numbers.

Quite the opposite, the Knights have the advantage with MORE area not with less.

The key is that the peasants can't actually stop a mounted charge.

Of all the places to see this myth, Bay12 is pretty low on the list of places I'd expect.  Field plate wasn't that heavy, it's less encumbering than a modern fire fighter's outfit.  Even the stuff mounted knights used.  Jousting plate was never used in real battle

I always have to go back to this counter which is a myth too in conotation.

It is less heavy then you think but more significant then it would seem.

Again, gulden spurs.
Quite the "mounted charge" right there.
Tough that one was apprantly terribly timed as somebody said that the infantry could have won it, if the nobles and knights wouldnt have moved in for the kill.

There was a -20% effectiveness thanks to Terrain disadvantage I believe...  Also, another -20% effectiveness thanks to overconfidence/glory hogging.

I was about to bring up katana's right when the knight discussion started for the lulz, but I changed my mind ;)
