Vegas odds are looking pretty good that he will find it "shocking" and "saddening".
I'm fairly certain most people do. What else would he say? He expected it all along? He's glad it happened?
That's not the point. We've gotten to a state where sanitized political speech has practically become a code unto itself.

And if you'll recall the attempted murder of that one representative, Obama didn't exactly handle the last "national tragedy" of this sort very well.

IIRC the what's-his-name (Brenn? Brinn? Anders Breivik ) Finnish Norwegian neonazi who shot that summer camp is still ahead as far as bloody statistics go...
What surprises me is that (thankfully) he seems to be the exception rather than the rule. It's kind of surprising that these spree killers rarely kill more than one or two dozen people. I would think that with access to firearms they would be more destructive than they end up being.
Medicine is wonderful stuff. It's lucky most psychopaths don't seek military training before going berserk.
Aside from that, consider how much ammunition can actually be brought in. Guns themselves are big and heavy, and their clip sizes are limited to at most a few dozen rounds. There isn't really time for the nutter to reload clips, so any additional ammo will likely need to be already in separate clips; and those add extra bulk and weight in addition to the guns; which may themselves need to be concealed. The norway neonazi brought in his stuff in a big duffle bag (there may have even been multiple bags, I can't remember). For those who simply carry the stuff in, they don't have the carrying capacity for more than a small number of guns or a small number of clips. 60-100 shots is probably about the absolute upper limit for them. Most of those shots will then be non-lethal or non-lethal if medical treatment is administered. Even assuming they are aiming individual shots, they're only going to be able to kill a dozen or so people before running out of ammo.

I can't imagine the shit Warner Brothers is flipping now that their massively hyped, small-country's-GPD-budget blockbuster movie has been stained like this on opening night.

As for tightening security at other places, they could say "Well this was a lone nutcase and there's no credible threat of future attacks, so we're gonna stay home and watch cat videos on the internet" but that's not what people want to hear.  It's just security theater (oh my god)

Easy access to firearms is a wonderful thing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rampage_killers:_Americas

Just the ones in USA seem equal to the entire 20th century of Europe and the Soviet Union (which is a LOT more people than USA) - and remember they had 2 world wars ravage the continent in that period while America had Coca Cola and baseball going on as the most stressful things.

Considering that you had armed groups ALL across Europe during the 20th century (rebellions, resitance movements, dubious post-war armed counter-communist militias who still have armouries to this day, e.g. Operation Gladio), I don't think the statistics really match what you're trying to say - that European gun laws don't work. Those laws are of recent origin and most of those massacres are historical.

Look at actual figures from homicides.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

Gun-law lovin' Western Europe has the lowest homicide rates on the planet, other than maybe Japan

West and Central Europe 2010: 1.2 homicides per 100,000 people

North America 2010: 4.7 homicides per 100,000 people

I'm honestly kind of surprised that this is the first time a whackjob has ever actually gone to a packed movie theater to tear shit up to a violent soundtrack.

But more to the point, oh my fucking God.  This is going to echo for a while.
Especially coming on the back of the Alabama bar shooting last week that left 17 wounded....you know, the one most people ignored because there weren't fatalities, or maybe because rednecks drinking in a bar don't make as sympathetic victims as kids watching Batman on the big screen.  :-\

Shit, dude. You know what we call that down here? Friday. People get shitfaced every friday night down here.

New thread for gun control debate?

He's said a lot of things that sound like desperate calls for attention. I'd say it's the former.
Being shocked is a cry for attention now? Okay.
Putnam was referring to the shooter, not Obama.

And yeah, MSH gets what I was going for. The public responses are so boilerplate that they virtually write themselves at this stage. Both sides of the aisle will express "great sadness" at this "national tragedy" and extend their sympathies towards the families of the victims and to the community of Aurora. And then they'll maybe (depending on how much class they lack) try to work in a partisan snipe (I fully expect somebody on the GOP side to make some statement to the effect that this is what ATF should be busy with rather than "letting Mexican drug cartels buy guns").

Meanwhile, I have no doubt that both the Obama and Romney campaigns (and probably smaller campaigns in Colorado) are busy figuring out the best way to use this to their advantage and beat their opponent over the head with it. The NRA is, no doubt, getting ready to tell us all how this could have been prevented if only we allowed everyone to go to the movies fully armed, because 100 random amateurs with firearms in a gas-filled, darkened movie theater is a recipe for clean and efficient justice and totally not a bloodbath.

Do not listen to the things ggamer says. Bar shootings are not weekly events "down here".

Well, if memory serves, he's not "down here", he's "down there". I could halfway believe that shit down in the FL panhandle.

Update: shooter is identified as James Holmes, 24, up until last month a medical student at the University of Colorado. At least 4 weapons to be submitted for tracing: 1 5.56mm semi-auto rifle (possibly converted illegally to full auto), 1 12-gauge shotgun, 2 pistols of unknown caliber.

Also, ATF and law enforcement have confirmed that the suspect's apartment was in fact booby-trapped with some kind of improvised incendiary device. Not explosives, per se, but something that seems to have been designed to set the place on fire if the cops had just busted down the door. They're in the process of dismantling it now. That was a bit of a surprise.

Medical students are infamously put under very high amounts of stress. Contributing factor?

I'd bet money that it won't work when they test it. If they test it. Do they test these things for functionality?
