He was pretty damn well-armed. At least 3 rifles, one shotgun, and a canister of CS gas.
But, being 18 he is considered a legal adult and hence could legally purchase this gear without any one else's permission (although CS gas is extremely difficult to purchase at anything larger than "keychain" size in the civilian market...maybe army/navy surplus?)

My gut instinct? Dude wasn't entirely stable, wanted to be Bane. *shrug*
It's a sad thing.

It's really awful. A friend just finished telling me about this on the phone. Admittedly they said it was 50 dead so I'm pleased to find out the number is much lower but still.

I was under the impression he was 24 (from the BBC article). Sorry to nitpick.

I'm also hearing 24, and that only 12 people are confirmed dead.

Apparently he said there was a bomb in his car (There wasn't) and bombs in his apartment (They're still working on that) which makes it sound like he was doing it for notoriety, trying to keep the drama up as long as he could.

But damn... It isn't even July 22nd and we get another madman gunning down innocents.

Could be. I'm working off the incident report from our ops center. (which said "approx 18 years old")

Either way, >18 means no oversight required, as the purchaser is considered a legal adult.

Our initial reported casualty count was 14 (10 onsite, 4 enroute to hospital).

EDIT:
Ok, seeing some updated details. Casualty count adjusted down to 12, suspect was wearing body armor and a gas mask, over 50+ wounded (which might be where that initial high casualty report came from). Suspect is identified as 24yo, victims range in age from 6 to 31 (kinda wtf...who takes their SIX YEAR OLD to go see an R-rated Batman movie at midnight??)

Really? I could have sworn you actually need a license for that.

For what? Semi-auto rifles? Not really. Well....depends on state. I'd have to check but I'm assuming Colorado (being one of the Mountain West states) has pretty lax gun laws.

EDIT: Yeah, after checking...Colorado not only doesn't require you to register your firearms, it actually prohibits state and local government from maintaining a registration database. And you're allowed to travel anywhere you want with a gun in your vehicle or on your person as open-carry, as long it's use is personal defense ("Yes, sir...I need these 3 rifles and this here tear gas to defend my car! There's bandits up at Dead Horse Gulch, you know!")

Of course, I believe businesses still have the legal right to ban firearms from their premises.

I'm honestly kind of surprised that this is the first time a whackjob has ever actually gone to a packed movie theater to tear shit up to a violent soundtrack.

But more to the point, oh my fucking God.  This is going to echo for a while.

Is there a legal reason for that, or is there just no civilian market for CS gas?

What the hell is up with Colorado spree killers and fake/nonfunctioning explosives?

I don't see why. Mass murder is terrible, of course, but this stuff is hardly unheard of.

Especially coming on the back of the Alabama bar shooting last week that left 17 wounded....you know, the one most people ignored because there weren't fatalities, or maybe because rednecks drinking in a bar don't make as sympathetic victims as kids watching Batman on the big screen.  :-\
Sorry, that was perhaps uncalled for...but it does seem like this is a bit of "missing white girl" syndrome.
