What surprises me is that (thankfully) he seems to be the exception rather than the rule. It's kind of surprising that these spree killers rarely kill more than one or two dozen people. I would think that with access to firearms they would be more destructive than they end up being.

What? All I'm saying that if gun access to gun control discussion was more limited then there wouldn't be as many arguments about it. For example, if only certified people were allowed to argue, arguments would be a lot rarer, and there wouldn't be as many victims from gun control discussions.

Most likely the kid wasn't aimed at directly. Not because I think he could have done it, but because I'm not sure how you could not lethally injure a baby if you shot at it.

The baby was there because some parents are very inconsiderate of other people and bring their babies to places they shouldn't be. If I had a dollar for all the times I had my ear screamed in by some jackass infant...

Still, must be a tough kid if he/she survived a gunshot wound at 3-months old. I'm pretty sure 3-month olds can still suffer brain damage from the hole in the top of their skulls.

Don't act like this is some unbelievable thing. People have been killing and maiming children since the dawn of humanity. Sometimes even their own children. In a sense it was more common than not until modern times, and even now plenty of people still hurt children.

Re: baby getting shot.

I really don't see it as much worse than anyone else getting shot. Whole life ahead of them and all that, yeah, but an adults life isn't "worth" any less.

Side-note: I stand corrected....it's PG-13, not R. The last one was PG-13 as well. I honestly question what the living fuck it takes to get an R rating, now. Apparently you'd have to vivisect someone on-screen in order to get an R...or show some boobs. 


As to the shooter's motivations....I saw one report that his mother immediately called the police up there and said "You've got the right individual...I'm flying to Colorado". Sounds like she knew he was unstable.

@scriver: It's all good, bro. I just....major shooting events like this ruin my day on more than one level. It means I'm going to be busy much of the day coordinating support for the response team on the ground, and it means my email is going to be awash in stuff revolving around it. Same story with the Giffords shooting in Arizona, same story whenever there's a major explosion or fire. Then there's the fact that these things tear me apart inside because I feel like we (the law enforcement community in general, ATF more specifically) have failed in our job when something like this happens. That despair turns pretty readily into rage when I think about the fact that we've failed because we're set up to fail.

When you have incredibly permissive gun laws like in Colorado, when you have Congress legislatively forbidding ATF from computerized tracking of gun purchases, when you have things like .50cal rifles (not that one was used here, only seen reference to a 12-gauge shotgun and 5.56mm rifles) available for purchase by the civilian market....it just makes me want to grab [president of the NRA] Wayne LaPierre's face and rub it in the blood of the slain while screaming "BAD DOG! HOW DOES THAT TASTE?!!?"

It isn't exactly like the MPAA are objective judges of content.

They really shouldn't even be involved. If I ever own a cinema the MPAA ratings will not be permitted.
