Yup, the rebels will see themselves as freedom fighters, overthrowing the tyranny, while soldiers will have it drilled into them that they're Defending The Republic from the Anarchists.

Along with the 'Overthrow American Dictatorship' scenario, this assumes there will clearly be a dictatorship. If there is a dictatorship, it won't clearly say "ARGH I'M A BIG BAD DICTATORSHIP'.

And who has said such an event is required for a population to feel disenfranchised and decide they've had enough?

Not supporting anything here... just saying that civil war isn't just a matter of X side's soldiers (led by Mr. Obvious Big Bad) being capable of killing all of Y side's soldiers.

Some "expert" was on about this and blaming the movie for influncing people and causing this to happen.

Why did he remove all his armour and gasmask and put away his guns and sit there for the cops?

When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Luckily for everyone, the odds of the US actually becoming a dictatorship and us actually having to test this are nearly nonexistent.

In some people's opinions, America is already a dictatorship under the guise of capitalism.   Furthermore, those opinions state that America is ruled by commercial interests via political lobbying from industries such as the oil industry, defense industry and so forth.

Quote from: Wikipedia
A dictatorship is defined as an autocratic form of government in which the government is ruled by an individual: a dictator. It has three possible meanings:
1.  A Roman dictator was the incumbent of a political office of legistrate of the Roman Republic. Roman dictators were allocated absolute power during times of emergency. Their power was originally neither arbitrary nor unaccountable, being subject to law and requiring retrospective justification. There were no such dictatorships after the beginning of the 2nd century BC, and later dictators such as Sulla and the Roman Emperors exercised power much more personally and arbitrarily.

2.  A government controlled by one person, or a small group of people. In this form of government the power rests entirely on the person or group of people, and can be obtained by force or by inheritance. The dictator(s) may also take away much of its peoples' freedom.

3.  In contemporary usage, dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by law, constitutions, or other social and political factors within the state.

As bolded above, and considering the state of censorship, TSA, etc currently limiting and taking away freedoms...   it could easily be argued that America falls under the category of a government controlled by a small group of people, i.e. corporations.

Let me ask you a question:   Do you truly believe your vote counts?

And second:  Do you fear your government, or does your government fear you?

Back to the original topic:

What happened was a tragedy, but the individual involved clearly had planned this ahead of time.  If the reports are true, he was a Ph.D candidate that was withdrawing from school.   It is obvious he was in a bad state of mind and his motives IMO at least had nothing to do with politics, gun control, violence in movies or any other agendas.   I think he was mentally unstable, and decided to lash out violently and possibly either go on a spree or choose suicide by cop.   Since he had tactical gear, he was still capable of thinking in terms of self-preservation, which puts him in a category of probably anger issues or such.   I doubt we will ever know the reasons, if there are any, that explain why he did what he did.

All we can do is extend support to the victims, and try to remember that the killer is also a victim.   Something put him in his state of mind to do this horrible act, and until we as a society can recognize people approaching this point, we still have learning to do.

@SalmonGod:

The point of my statement was that a dictatorship doesn't call it a dictatorship. You look at all these dictatorships, from Nazi Germany to North Korea, and even though a lot of people knew it was a dictatorship, you had a sizible number who believe that they are living in a free state.

My gut feeling is that it was political, and specifically about the stuff in the first half of your post.

This movie is definitely Hollywood's biggest right now. And Hollywood's one of those big giant corporations lobbying the government to the extreme. So why not attack it? Of course, a corporation isn't a person, so you can't hit it with guns. That doesn't mean some idiots won't try... it didn't stop Timothy McVeigh from trying to hit "the government" with a bomb, after all.

That's my theory anyway. Won't know for certain until mr Holmes says himself why he did it.

It's always a possibility.    I highly doubt we will ever learn the reason or hear from the shooter.   I'm not sure I even want to in any case.   :-\

Won't he plead insanity instantly? I mean that seems to be the way these things go.

And nah, if you really wanted to hit hollywood you'd have to have a combined force of millions of people across the nation doing something really simple, just not watching movies for a while. These guys only care about profit anyway, which I find to be a spectacularly horrible determinant of what a company is doing right or wrong.

The days of insanity pleas for everything are over. It is now much more difficult to legally qualify for an insanity defense.

Plus, ya'know, the fact it was at the premiere, so unless he worked for the studio or something, he hadn't even seen it yet...

Honestly... the best response to this whole situation is not to talk about it at all.  The kind of attention these events get is completely disproportionate to the rest of reality, as I described in the sad thread a short while ago, and that's usually why people do things like this.  They want attention.  They may not always want this attention for the same reasons ("go out with a bang"/bring attention to an issue/cause paranoia/just plain become infamous), but the bottom line is always attention and the media gives them exactly what they want.
