The movie version of At the Mountains of Madness was killed by that, Guillermo refused to make it PG13 and that was a dealbreaker, compounded by the fact that it was thematically identical to Prometheus, which was going ahead regardless.
The way I heard it was At The Mountains of Madness was killed because the The Wolfman flopped (it was terribad) and the relevant executives decided that meant no one wanted horror mystery films.

The point about Prometheus is something I hadn't thought of before, though. At least At The Mountains of Madness had clear reasons for the Elder Things and the Shoggoth hating humanity,

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Here's the entire deal with ratings:
Rule 1: OMG THEENK OF CHEELREN. CANT EXPLANE SEX, BAN IT!
Rule 2: OMG BLOOD BAD.
Rule 3: BAD WERDS BAD.
Then they decide to randomly enforce those rules if they feel like it.

Note that content warnings will still allow people to rage about these things, but viewers themselves will be the ones to decide if it matters to them or not. So no more shoving morality down other people's throats, and the moral guardians will be satisfied that they're getting their word out. Win-win.

But no, ratings are used due to being "easier to understand." Because lazy idiots aren't to blame for their idiocy. I guess we should take that stupid nutritional information off food and give everything a Healthiness Rating, just so people aren't confused by all the numbers.

I think that broke my sarcasmo-meter.

Cool down, dude. Take some deep breaths and go for a walk, and when you come back calm, we can have a discussion. Getting angry and extremely aggressive is a no-no here.

Care to point out where I'm angry? I'm perfectly calm.

That's... even worse. Getting emotional gives an excuse for spouting shit like telling people to die. You got nuttin', then?

This is the internet. Emotional status is implied through word choice rather than read through body language, and your wording suggests you are angry. You can be both angry and calm.

This is not a gun control debate. But neither is it a movie ratings debate. Please, take that discussion to a relevant thread too, please.

I'm really hoping there isn't too much fallout over this. Airports are hellish to get through since 9/11. I don't want to be padded down every time I enter a crowded theatre. I've made a couple jokes here and elsewhere about them finding my candy while doing that, but it's a serious concern as well.

Not much more to say, at least until the dude's motive is revealed. Then I can blast his logic (or lack thereof) for doing this to pieces.

1. You state that ratings have gotten more strict over time.
2. I present citations of academic studies indicating the precise opposite (that movies of the same rating have quantifiably more violence, sex and language than in previous decades)
3. Your reaction: "Hmmm, that's interesting. Either way though the overall rating system is full of shit."

To me, that's kind of a sidestep. It's like arguing for one political party, then being presented with a counter-argument, then invoking the ever-popular "Well, they're all crooks anyways."

But that's no big deal one way or the other. I'm more curious about the one-word response which was either a German feminine article, or a suggestion to go snuff myself. And I don't get the feeling that du sprichst Deutsch.
