$6.99 for generic storebrand eggs in New England, 9 or 10 for a dozen of the 'good' stuff.

I love eggs, easy protein, but it's quite literally twice as expensive as it has been historically, if not more.

I bought 16oz of 90% lean organic ground beef for 5.50 on sale the other day.  Imagine its cheaper to cook ground beef than eggs

Still got a bit to go, there; that's .29/oz vs .34/oz, heh. Large size eggs (which are usually the generic storebrand) are a fairly standardized 2oz per, so a dozen's 24/about 1.5 lbs.

The problem with eggs is that it's typically the cheapest possible source of animal protein.  So when it's price goes up...look out.

Is there a standard definition anywhere for all this new "software defined <thing>" trend going on? Or is it just marketing-speak?

For example, "software-defined radio" or "software-defined vehicle."  I'm sorry, but while there are things that software can configure, it's always limited by the hardware on which it's running. A software defined vehicle can't change its sheet metal. A software-defined radio can't transmit more power than the electronics can supply.

Is it just a codeword for "we'll limit the hardware functionality and lock it behind arbitrary software restrictions?"

It's probably AIs fault.

AI as it exists now is software, yeah?  So it's kind of like innuendo?

It means something that was previously in dedicated hardware is now implemented in and/or configurable from software. A software-defined radio for example means a bunch of signal processing that was formerly in hardware is now in software. That's why it's "software defined whatever" and not just "software whatever", which your objection about hardware would make sense about. The usage probably reads as weird because it requires the context of the history of a particular task. Also, I don't think it's (relatively) new.

It predates current usage of "AI" by a good bit, so it's unrelated.

Anyone know what the plastic flap on the centre-front of the undercarriage of my car is? It caught when I was parking up (Low car, tall bollard holder) and broke off. Figure it's not too important, probably a mudguard or something, but I just want to be sure.

it is.  It stops rain, pebbles, etc from running up into the undercarriage where they can potentially do damage.  Especially at highway speeds.  It only takes one lucky hit, after all, to strike something and dislodge it.

'need' it? probably not.  But they insisted on putting it there to protect your car from debris.

Yeah, I lost mine too after the bumper got ripped off by a tow hook; nothing has been damaged thus far, but the fact the timing belt is literally right there exposed when you look under the vehicle... I wish I could splurge to get it and the bumper replaced.

I'm due to have it serviced and MOT'd in a month, so I'll raise it then. I was going to anyway, but at least I know it's not something that'll cause my car to die halfway through a drive in all likelihood.

I've yet to run into a vehicle that still has that bit of plastic after a few years.
