You may be the one worrying about it most out of everyone around you.

Why do you feel simultaneously right and wrong? Don't get me wrong, I am an overthinker. Of course I am aware that I think where most people just don't. But... It very much is a big deal around these parts to a very large amount of people. So it isn't all me, I am sure of it. I even got a death threat over it, after all.

Over what exactly, though? I could certainly imagine that, in Turkey, you could get death threats if you're perceived as gay, but often even people like that don't really care if a straight man is "manly".

ETA: but anyway, before I get sidetracked, don't get me wrong, like I said, "most" people. It wouldn't surprise me either if you CAN FIND some people there who feel that way, too. I just doubt you're hanging out with very many, and in particular, your comment about "fail[ing] the masculinity check" to me deserves the response of pointing out that most people won't have the slightest thought of checking your masculinity at all.

I am overthinking and overanalysing a very nebulous concept. I know that. I guess I just think in overarching systems and frameworks and I am trying reveal one into view by rationalising irrational cultural elements, where there is none.

Well... yeah, but that's pretty common. It happens. As long as you don't get caged into a social paradigm entirely of your own making, it's not the end of the world.

Probably worth mentioning that different cultures can have wildly differing views on what masculinity is, and how important it is to present to the world. Not all personal experience is equally applicable.

What's the point of a strategic nuclear bomber in this day and age with ICBMs all over the place? On top of that, why are the bombers some ~70 years old, given that AA systems have advanced so much since then?

Not that Im really informed, but I imagine that having multiple avenues of delivery as well as having more precise control of the bomb's release is useful.

More options - better options.  I bet we have drones capable of delivering a payload as well.

Also not an expert but maybe some of your other questions answer why the bombers are 70 years old?

If I wanted to answer this question more serious I'd look it up, and a 1/2 arsed effort shows icbms are 1957, just past the 70 year date.

ICBMs do have the advantage that we've yet to create any robust defences against them, they're just too damn fast to get a half decent hit rate.

Bombers are flexible. I mean, grandpa Buff can be used to drop all sorts of flavourbooms, not just nukes. Plus, ICBS are complex and expensive - though, anyone capable of making a halfway reliable nuke (looking at you, DPRK) should be able to make/sustain a decent ICBM... though, recent Ruski test of the Satan kinda shows the issue.

I'm guessing it's flexibility that keeps the planes in service too. You're not gonna bomb any hard targets with them, they'll just get shot down, but you can retool them for lots of other tasks. Dropping aide or firefighting, for example. Scouting and reconnaissance and other electronics packages

ngl the mental image of a nuclear capable stealth bomber doing firefighting work is kinda' incredible

also holy shit on a sunday cracker would it be a staggering waste of money, the operating costs on those things aren't jokes and there's probably cheaper fire retardant functional aircraft by like an order of magnitude or somethin'

You can use strategic nuclear bombers to peel potatoes too. They're generally nice to have.

I highly doubt any nuclear bombers are being used to fight many fires, tbh. There are indeed plenty of mothballed or otherwise aging-out craft that can be repurposed first.

If we sneak up on the fire, we can do critical damage to it  :o
