Iirc lead's, like... pretty soft? So even an ingot, just touching it could get some the nasty stuff on you, which can then get in you, etc., etc.

It's soft, but doesn't flake or anything like that. Used to play with it. It's dangerous when you let it leach into water, inhale vapours, etc. It's generally an issue with chronic exposure, not just getting into contact with.

I imagine it's a bit like mercury, the element's fine because the body doesn't readily absorb it, but once it's bound up in something the body will and that's when it becomes dangerous.

You can actually swallow liquid mercury and it'll pass through you mostly fine. Probably absorb some because it's bound to react with something or other in there in small amounts, but it used to be a solution to constipation which is a hilariously brute-force method. Can't shit? Swallow something heavy so it pushes it out.
