The river is flooding!
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:08:18 pm »

I didn't know that could happen! Has anyone else ever had a river unexpectedly flood during a long rainstorm? Did it cause any "fun"?

My dwarfs are making their camp on high ground, so I don't think it will hurt them. My fisher-dwarf just drowned....

I thought that was a 2D only thing.  Are you playing .34.XX?

I'm playing with lazy newb pack 34.11. I think it is because the river drops down one z level down part of the way through the map, so that part of the river is surrounded by dirt walls that are higher than it, and those make it act like a partially filled pool. I'll take a screen shot when it stops raining and flooding so that you can see what I am talking about.

It's also draining out of a small lake, so that might be helping it flood too.

The primary reason for flooding rivers is that the map in question has biomes that freeze and thaw at different times. As a result, the warmer sections have running water that runs into an ice wall downstream in the colder biome and that whelm its banks causing a flood.

At a guess, the river cut through a murky pool during worldgen and is filling when it rains. If you turn off weather, it should rain forever and you could build an ark.

Are you running any mods?

This sort of thing is hard-coded.

Yes. A completely dammed river in a succession fort. The fortress was located inside the river. It was a really big river.

I happened to have the turn during the wet season. It flooded very quickly.

The moral of the story is : Rivers flood just as much as pools do when it rains.

This happens to me on any waterfall that freezes at the bottom, and I'm just using the Phoebus packaged tileset, no (other) mods.

That's why I only have tall waterfalls. Two or three z is enough to keep accidental flooding. Of course, we all know nothing provents purposeful flooding.

The real question I have is...

Can this be efficiently weaponized!?  I'd love to have a river do my handiwork for me, as my dwarves stand watching behind aquarium glass.

You could make a cistern that fills with pressurized water with convenient floodgates, then you have an automatic flood and summonable bursts of pressurized water.

Contaminate it with FB blood.

Dump magma over it.

Freeze it.
