Assuming you have a monitor already, you can build a very solid machine for around $600.  Depending on budget, you can easily swing that anywhere in the $500-$800 range.  Updating an older machine depends entirely on how old and what parts are in it already.

Well I have a 2005 Windows XP MCE with all the original parts. I've been too cheap to upgrade.

Throw that to the dump theres no point in upgrading that dinosaur :\

You can get a decent computer at around $650 which gets you at least to HD gaming without lag.

I recently spec'd a mid-to-low-end gaming pc for ~£320 (it's based on an AMD Fusion CPU/GPU, price is only for base unit and Windows 7 Home Premium, no peripherals). The only difference between it and a high-end pc would be adding a dedicated graphics card for however much and maybe a slight PSU upgrade.

If you're working to a budget seriously consider AMD parts, Intel have better CPUs available, but they're very expensive. AMD can match anything else, and for the really cheap end AMD's integrated graphics far far far outstrips Intel's.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Not sure where you're from here but http://www.palicomp.co.uk/ do decently priced computers. I'm buying the Alpha Excite from them tomorrow when I get paid.

that 6670 isn't mid level for gaming more like entry level, you can get a 7770 for $140 and get the same performance of a 6870

I was just providing moderately prices options. That could run many games reasonably well.

Yeah, you can basically turn any mid-high end computer into a gaming rig by adding a good graphics card. If you can spare it, buy two and SLI/Crossfire them together.

Oh god, don't buy a computer from some shop in a mall. Floor computers are overpriced crap for the most part. Order the parts and build it, it isn't hard, or order one from a reputable site.

if you are not a professional system builder, go with Tom's Hardware builds. You probably wont be able to do better without a tremendous amount of work.
They have a build posted monthly in almost any price range.
