No.  Amputate the entire dwarf, piece by piece, and replace them with prosthetic parts.  There should be no noticeable change in intelligence, and a massive increase in combat effectiveness and durability.

This would be awesome and terrifying all at the same time, it MUST happen.

I wouldn't be against prosthetics, but they should be at most a peg or a hook. Losing limbs should never be a good thing.

Peglegs and hooks.... Well we will need eyepatches because of all the peasents we purposly give iron hooks for self defence forgeting about it and having an itchy eye... Then of course people will be cutting of dwarves hands just so they have legions of eyeless dwarves not fearing the enemy they can't see...

THIS... MUST... HAPPEN!!!

Masterwork does something similar with their golems and armored war dogs, although I think they end up as war pets.

Also, were-curses aren't exactly what you're looking for, but could be made to work.  Every full moon, the prosthetic skeleton turns the dwarf into "a motionless dwarf on the floor"/a statue/a blob of quivering goo/whatever, while it recharges its mystical energies.

Castes may also be worth looking at, but I don't know if they have the needed flexibility.

I'm hardly an expert on the matter though, not even particularly knowledgeable.  The modding forum is that way. ---->

dude, this is DF, unless you spend the whole game farming on like 2 z-levels in an animal-less biome dwarves are gonna lose limbs, AND A HOOK CANNOT REPLACE A WHOLE ARM, this is DF, the limbs must be cool
