Toady's Sample DF Map with Overlays
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:08:00 pm »

I wanted to see how the various map views looked when transposed over the basic map, so I took the time to load up all the maps into a single file with multiple layers, each transposed (and resized) so they fit over the standard map. You can then toggle the layer's opacity to see how it affected the map creation and different regions of the world.

The thing is, I'd like to share them all, but need a place to store the files. Also, I used the GIMP program, which is an open-source equivalent to the expensive and/or annoying trials provided by Photoshop or PaintShopPro. I can save the files as an .XCF, which is the GIMP native format, or .PSD (Photoshop) format. Anyone interested in viewing/hosting the files?

.xcf = compressed to 11 MB (RAR)
.psd = compressed to 11.8 MB (RAR)

I could host it for you on www.jtgibson.ca/df.   Plenty of monthly transfer allowance.

Drop 'em off at jt*jtgibson.ca if you'd like and I'll put 'em up as soon as I get 'em.

It looks like Toady is implementing a newer, more highly detailed option for map output.

Send them to: xx@xxxxxxxx.xx?

Yeah... the asterisk was intended to minimise spam harvests, but eh. =P

The new map system is almost a premonition of DF's inevitable move to less ASCII visuals. Even though I've been playing DF for more than a year now, I still find the overworld map screens nearly incomprehensible.

They make more sense when you see them overlaid. Besides, what Toady is talking about is taking each individual map square and expanding it into a graphic representation, more like a real map. To represent an entire world in this way would take up a lot of memory and pixels. I'll upload the files this evening.

I hope not. ASCII visuals are the best thing for your imagination.

I just hope that if you build a huge structure or something it'll show up.

Hi, JT, per your comment in FotF2, I've sent some images your way.  At least it says they are sending.

Of course, in this case, the ASCII visual contains much less pertinent information, and not just "does the dragon have shiny red spikes" information, but it is either missing the brooks or too zoomed in to make use of.  Not that I'm changing over to graphics.  But I think there's a place for these image exports.  Oh, and no imagination vs. graphics flame war.

As an aside, any chance we could get a map legend, Toady? For instance, I still have no idea what the different colors of dwarven fortresses mean.

Legend

I guess it didn't mention site colors.  It's just a population indicator.  They are ordered on that page, though the dwarf ones are ordered 2 1 3 from left to right in terms of pop size.

Yeah I knew about that page. It's not complete though, I'm sure I've seen blue fortresses for instance.

Ah, if you are in embark mode, the blue fortresses are the ones belong to your civ.  Red are your old dungeons I think.

They are being sent right now. Hopefully, they will be up soon for all of you to enjoy. Remember, they are in PSD (Photoshop) and XCF (GIMP) format.
