A better quote tag system idea
« on: July 16, 2012, 03:06:22 am »

Just an idea for a better quote tag for really any forum in general, but since I'm already here in the Bay12 forums, might as well post it here:

Rather than having a quote tag that lets you fill it in, like
Code: [Select]
[quote] Enter crap here [/quote]
Why not make the quote directly reference a post, so even if the original post gets updated, the quote gets updated too. It would also prevent someone from, for some reason, modifying what someone originally said. It would look like a url token, with a post# in the url, but instead of url, it would be quote. To better explain it, it'd look like this:
Code: [Select]
[quote=http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=112539.msg3418570#msg3418570]
That's just an example url from a different thread, but it's the same concept. Notice how the url includes what topic and what post. With that information, it wouldn't be hard to make a direct reference to the post, rather than relying on server generated/human entered text.

Just thought that'd be a good idea for a better quote tag, lemme know what you think :P

But you are replying to what the other person said before he edited. Your new quote system is only useful for people who know what will happen in the future: Mayas and Gypsies.

This decreases functionality, not increases.

Yeah, a lot of the time it's best to only pick out part of a post.

It would also prevent someone from, for some reason, modifying what someone originally said.
On the other hand, it would allow someone to change what they said in the first place to make the quote make no sense.

And quote pyramids could be problematic.

Why not make the quote randomly steal posts from other people and garble it together to make an incoherent message that advertises sunglasses?

Good in theory, but sometimes I want to quote a huge huge post except just to reply to a certain part... and other times I have to quote people that aren't on the forums.
