Imagine: (Semi)Megabeast Drive, what are your choices?
« on: July 15, 2012, 02:48:04 pm »

I just never could get over this line of thinking. So lets go into the future where Toady for some unfathomable reason does another drive except instead of animals he goes for a (Semi)Megabeast Drive. Now for some unfathomable reason you entered the drive and donated meaning you get one choice for what creature you would want added to the game.

What would you chose?

Personally I am leaning towards a: "Mother of All Monsters" megabeast who is protected by hoards of her children.

Shoggoths.  Living heavy industrial equipment turned out of control killing machines really speak to the dwarven spirit, imo.

Especially if you could capture them and retrain them to serve as laborers or quasi-workshops.

Manticores, those things look like they'd be interesting with the new combat system. Choosing to dodge a claw or stinger, then just getting knocked off balance by a wing and eaten seems pretty in tune with the spirit of adventure mode to me.

I just hope if there actually IS a drive that Toady picks ~10 winners out of a possible pool using donated money as votes so we don't waste months of dev time like the animal drive.

I agree, a drive with a lot less winners instead of more.

If anyone is wondering why the poll is there... I kinda didn't know how to remove it, so enjoy :D

A basilisk would be pretty cool. It would probably need to be made larger than most descriptions will have it since a small semimegabeast sucks. The hard part would be trying to find a way to make creatures avoid the petrifying stare.

Avoid? Fuck that.  Line 'em up on a conveyor belt (or powered minecart track, whichever) and get mostly-free masterwork statues.  :)

No comment on Basilisks, seems like something that would fit in with the Centaur and Chimera Statues though!

Manticores would certainly be awesome - regardless of they are design they would be a fearsome foe. One of the incarnation of a Manticore monster I first encountered would be in Castle of the Winds, was one of the monsters I feared second most.

The prime monster though that I feared in Castle of the Winds the most though had to be the Gelatinous Glob (based of D&D's Gelatinous Cube). Not sure though how much Toady would like to copy the idea of such a monster though, since it would be based off another game entirely, while everything else in the game is mostly based off real world mythology. However if added, it would make a nice additional cavern monster. Alternatively there is work around for the idea; like just making some sort of Encompassing Slime monster, which is hard to directly base off anything else, and really one that even Dungeons and Dragon's can't claim originality with.

Personally I would like to see some sort of monster based around Slime or Noxious Liquids anyhow, combining it with some powerful paralysis effects or maybe making it engage in an engulfing attack like effect shouldn't be too hard to think about and implement. As a bonus, maybe make it so that it destroys items - specifically weapons that pass through it (arrows and edged weaponry), or give it some interesting quirk for when it gets hit.

RPG enemy slimes and Lovecraft's shoggoths too seem to be based on some weird fusion of real-life slime molds, real-life amoebas, and the common fantasy idea that everything's worse when it's bigger.  It's not like anyone's got intellectual property rights for a simple amorphous entity which engulfs and digests stuff.

Hungry Heads are based of a DnD monster, I think...
But a Gelatinous (Shape) would be quite fun.
And destructive, since a single blob would be invincible.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Chimera would be interesting.

I would really like to see a Sphinx. With it being able to interact with the adventure dynamically, instead of something to just kill.

Banshee.  We already have harassing ghosts in play.  What about the REALLY bad ones, that can paralyze and kill with their wails?  May have to wait for sound propogation to come back into play.

A thing that can polymorph into the target it killed, with the same exact features as the one it killed. (requires new tag)

A Hydra tweak that makes it actually regenerate its heads if cut with a weapon other than the weapon it is weak to.

A phasing monster, one that can go through walls, like the banshee above.

An engulfing monster, akin to Nethack's purple worms.

A monster that keeps spawning offspring?

i like the basilisk and medusa idea, they'd turn the enemy into staues of themselves. i see how they could be gamebreaking though.
since the basilisc turns you into stone with his gaze he could have some sort of petrifying ray that would be dodgeable, maybe turning only the bodypart it hits into stone. some sort of amulet could protect you from it, maybe even armor
medusa would be a cursed person like the werecreatures and vampires, and it could scream in agony very loudly, so you could hear it before you see it, and either close your eyes or get the hell out of there and getting back only when you bought a mirror

A Frankenstein's-monster kinda thing. A human(oid) flesh golem deal.
Maybe, a rare occurence only plagueing ocean-side forts... A kraken?

i don't see how a kraken could intereact with a fortress at all. sea monsters would probably make more sense when (and if) boats or underwater playable civilizations get properly implemented
