clowns out of nowhere?

just watched my whole fortress getting slaughtered by two clowns. problem is: i have no idea where they came from. they just apeared in a mined tunnel. this is my first fortress in the latest release and i haven't played in a while. is this supposed to happen? can clowns just spawn in a mined tunnel? what just happened???

If your site has different biomes, sometimes the magma layer can intersect the circus.  Then clowns can fly up, past the magma-fall, and enter through any openings that you may have made to the magma layer.

no openings into magma layers either. no magma anywhere. not even warm stone.

no mods either.

i have never read the terms clowns and circus. sorry about any spoilers, i fixed my messages. so my fortress got annihilated by some completely random clowns, oh dear. that was a bit... too much fun. still not sure what happened.
