Yet another book thread
« on: July 14, 2012, 10:05:30 am »

We've had a few of these in the past, but not for some time. And I shall need books to read. Many books to read.

My personal list of good books that I've read recently begins with the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels by the late Stieg Larsson.

What do the good people of the forum suggest for reading or enjoy to read?

I've got a copy of George Harrison's autobiography I Me Mine staring at me. I really need to stop being so lazy.

Reading silly mystery novels, because that's all that my heat-addled brain can handle. Mysteries set in imperial Rome.

I have a fairly good-sized collection here at home. What sort of stuff are you interested in, RedWarrior?

All sorts of stuff, though scifi and fantasy are my go-to genres. House of Leaves is pretty much the only book I could think of to read aside from John Dies at the End, which I'm about halfway through. I'm a pretty quick reader, and prefer longer books because when I can read a book in an afternoon, it's cool, but the enjoyment doesn't last as long.

Try the Safehold series by David Weber. It's a bizarre mix of sci-fi and fantasy; although everything in the book is futuristic technology, from the viewpoints of many characters it is magic. It's also solid writing and will teach you more about old-school navel and ground warfare than you ever needed to know.

If you are interested (and it sounds like you might be), go to your local bookstore/library and search for "Off Armageddon Reef". It's the first in the series.

I finally finished Crime and Punishment! Despite the archaic wording/sentence structure and the confusing political references, it was a truly excellent book. It's always great when a 'classic novel' turns out to be actually good, and you're reading it for enjoyment rather than just in an attempt to seem brainy. :P
I may-or-may-not have burst into manly tears at a couple of points.

I've been re-reading some books lately, too. Like Peter Moorwood's series starting with The Horse Lord-- Oh hey, there was another sequel that I never heard about! :o --And While Angels Dance by Ralph Cotton. The former is a little bit, I don't know, over-the-top (mary sue-ish?) and perhaps cheesy, but damnit it's just so cool.
The latter is historical fiction about a member of the Jesse James gang, and it manages to be incredibly moving and deep whilst still containing a bankload of wild west action.

Reading Neuromancer now. Have Anathem, but I'm not sure if I'll get to it, because the sets of Ghost in the Shell and Nietzsche's writings I recently ordered are on their way. House of Leaves is my favorite book, and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series is great. I want to read The Stranger, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, and John Dies at the End, but my library has them checked out.

Also, A Song of Ice and Fire is overly praised.
