What aspect of DF have you NOT tried yet?
« on: July 13, 2012, 12:05:38 pm »

There's so much to do in DF that you can be playing for years and yet not have touched on some aspects of the whole game.

For me, I've never tried Adventure mode and I've never played with anything power-related, that includes doing anything with water or magma.
I've also never not cheated in any of my forts.

How about you?

Never cheated (unless you consider Therapist to be a cheat instead of a crutch).
Never collected Spider Silk Webs
Never played all that long in a Fortress after piercing a Fun Spire
Never used Screw Pumps, Water Wheels, Mills, etc
Never used a Modded Version (unless you consider Tilesets to be Mods)
Never used ASCII
Never played long enough to get a Baron or anything related and higher positioned
Never gone to War with the Elves, Humans, or Home Dwarves
Never visited a Cave with anything but Kobolds
Never done a Volcano Embark
.....

Could probably keep going on - there is so much to do in this game. I'd just have to think about it first on what I haven't done.

Industries: soap, clear/crystal glass, beekeeping
EDIT: never done anything with clay

Big, professional army (except some marksdwarves). I usually make a couple melee small squads but never use them for actual siege defense. They only kill surface wildlife and stuff in the caverns. My forts rely on efficient design and traps for defense.

Big pumping projects.

And I still have to break a candy spire.

EDIT: minecarts. I don't think I'm gonna try those anytime soon.

Wow. Where to start?

Haven't successfully made any adamantine anything...despite finding it and harvesting some.

Just recently started to get some good soldiers trained up.  Haven't done much adventure mode.

Never done pottery, glazing, wax making, animal husbandry, bird egg growing/harvesting...just to name a few

Never have worked with magma forges. I make coal or import it to run my forges. And I still have yet to work with minecarts.

A lot of what you guys haven't done is the same as what I haven't done.  Except I have played with magma fortress.  Also, I've never used Therapist.  Simplification is undwarfly.

Never used a tileset. And never will.

Never potted.

I tried beekeeping, and was sort of successful. It was a pet project for a very established megafort, so I wanted to do it big - but it was too buggy to do large-scale. I only ever got one or two pots of honey out of it.

Never done grinding/milling. I suspect that will change with the new stockpiling options, as I can now select what my dwarves use a whole bunch easier now.

Never tried a spider silk industry... just too risky independently, and never put enough effort into walling off part of the caverns.

Hmm... I can't think of anything else. I start to use therapist once my fort hits >150 dwarves... but not sooner than that.

Never tried peaceful diplomacy with the elves, not even when I was still learning the basics.

The way I have been treating them universaly in all the games they are in one would think that elves raped my cat and murdered my family when I was young.

Never tried an evil embark. Never worked with clay. Never tried adventure mode. Haven't (intentionally) weaponized minecarts. Never tried a freezing embark.

I think I'm going to try adventure mode yet. I'd like to see if I can get a vampire adventurer to migrate to my fort.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Never seriously used magma-based defenses. That's going to change in the fort I recently started.

Never weaponized minecarts. That's also going to change in the fort I recently started.

Never used cave-in traps, never tamed a dragon, never embarked in a vegetation-less area, never have done much with clay except make the occasional large pot or porcelain craft (out of imported kaolinite), never fully domesticated a local species, never flooded a fortress, never used a fountain/ mist generator, never pierced the fun spires (and have only gotten that deep a few times), never gotten two dwarves married in a fort, etc. etc. I'm sure I'll think of more...

Never used a tileset or therapist, anything that isn't ascii is too confusing.  Also, I've done a lot more adventure mode than fort.  I've done only the basics of a fort, despite that being, you know, the main part of the game.  I don't know why, I can just never seem to make a successful fort, though not for lack of trying.

Never built a "Fuck the World" fort ending contraption.

Never breached Hell or extracted adamantine.

Never had a queen.

Never fooled around with waterwheels or windmills.

Never built a danger room.

Never used a tileset.

Never built more than around 2-5 weapon traps in any given fortress.
