It's a game term for having guaranteed rolls. To take 10 means that your roll will automatically get 10 and then you can apply bonus' or penalties to that. Taking 20 is the same but with a 20 as a result. You can only do this with certain skills, heals wounds is one, but only if your character has more than enough time to do so or has special exceptions, like wearing a life jacket for example.

Look it up in the rules on the website dwarmin linked. It should also say which skills you can take 10 or 20 on in there too.

@Tiruin: Yeah, what Zak said. Aside from special situation, taking 10 can be done anytime you're not literally being shot at/about to be eaten/crushed into paste by ancient booby trap. It implies most people can, when not being pressured or panicked, swim their way across a calm lake or climb a wall.

Hmm, thinking of our first XP rewards-and how I should handle those.

How do you guys feel about a fixed percentage for the difficulty of the encounter-meaning you won't level any slower the higher you go-and minor but consistent XP rewards for just posting regularly and roleplaying?

This also means we won't have to bother tabulating exact XP amounts.
