Today I recieved the most difficult case I have ever seen in diagnosing: a fortress. Not just any fortress, but the fortress I live in. I don't know how anybody thought I could run this thing, especially as everyone seems to be in agreement that I'm pretty stupid. Anyway, I have tried to understand the inner workings of this fort (previously I only payed attention to the dwarves brought into my care). so far I have seen a list of nearly 90 creatures in this area, about half of which are prisoners and 3 of which are rather injured trolls who are still bent on killing us all, though they might be imprisoned. ) I have also found several levers, each with a small marking on the wall next giving a general idea of how to use it... I think. three are clearly marked for specific bridges, while a fourth is marked "danger room" and is two urists away from a danger room, so that's clear. THe next is labeled "execution lever", it is next to a ton of coffins...
it scares me. The final one is labeled "point 11" which is about as clear as mud. (ironic as the inscription is carved in mudstone) I can only guess that this is the famous waterfall-stopping lever created by our late previous overseer. (why, oh why did they have to give ME this job?) This is all I can gather from what I see, other than the obvious workshops, farms, etc. So... I guess it's time to get to work.
