I still want to know what they have against Pitbull and who the hell Pitbull is!
Couldn't it be just for the hell of it? They might not have anything against the guy. That's no reason not to do it anyway. Maybe they just like Alaska and want it to have some love. Or just did it to do it, just to see if they could.

Also have no idea who pitbull is, though.

I'm honestly not sure which prospect terrifies me more: that they believe that some undesirable trait of Wal-Mart or Pitbull causes them to 'deserve it' and this to magically become justified and productive, or that they literally are just doing this purely for a quick laugh when less disruptive alternatives are available :-\ As ridiculously-petty as it is, this little shenanigan showcases an aspect of humanity that I really hate seeing.

I'm trying to remember what Pitbull is, but all I can come up with is the word 'rumba' and the numerical sequence '1, 2, 3, 4'. I take this to mean that he's a dancing Cuban preschool teacher.

I'd give you a link, but I've already been around thirty seconds into one of his music videos and would rather not see or hear another. In my opinion, there is nothing down that path but shame, destruction, and bleeding ears. But for the foolish, brave, or perhaps both, there is always Youtube.

Wow, honestly hadn't expected that strong of a response to this.  Really, I just thought it was funny.  Funny enough that, in my random browsing, I actually chuckled out loud in a semi-public setting when I read about it.  It was a prank on an actually fairly large scale, and it required a great deal of organizing (which, for whatever else goons may lack, they've certainly got organization in spades).

It's not exactly a huge compliment to anyone, no, but it's not exactly hurting a lot of people either, now is it?  Hell, the marketing campaign just got a hell of a lot more press thanks to this stunt.  They could just as well be thanking SA, but I don't think anyone really wants to see that...

I guess I'm just biased though, I've never had much spare love in my heart for yet another uninspired modern rap artist that I'm apparently supposed to fall down on my knees and worship because of some weird pop culture snowball effect.  Really, the crack about bear repellent (which they really do have at the Kodiak Walmart) is pretty much the only thing I've seen him do that has made me respect him.

I don't see the requiring great deal of organization part...
They post up a thread asking people to vote for the Alaskan town... people vote for the Alaskan town.

70,000 people vote for the Alaskan town.  That requires some dedicated people willing to spread the word far beyond one thread on some semi-exclusive internet community forum.

I know it's a very far cry from really being harmful, but it still depresses me that people do shit like this :( Whether a lack of empathy or outright vindictiveness, I don't like what I'm seeing in this.

Also, nobody said you had to fall down and worship this Bitpull douche, mmkay? I do feel that taking my giving a shit about this Bulldog person for granted is a severe tactical error on the part of the marketing peeps, though :V  I'm not entirely sure who this Aggressive Canid guy even is.

Actually, yes they have.  And Bieber.  And Gaga.  I have specifically, personally, been told by acquaintances that I should love these people and their music.  Why?  Because they are popular.  Yes.  I have been told to like artists because they are popular, as I was forced to share a room with and rely upon people who interpret inherent worth as being determined by majority opinion.  No, I'm not making this up, that is an honest, truthful description of their beliefs from their own mouths.  Yes, I am fabulously bitter after that year.

I save my depression and loss of faith in humanity for causes I deem a little more deserving.  Like finding out Queensland has archaic laws about how it's not murder to kill a gay man if he hit on you first, and that there are now people actually supporting this and trying to keep it from being changed.  That makes me sad.  This makes me chuckle a bit and shake my head at the kids these days.

Clearly the only reason kids listen to rap/pop is to fit in, since there's absolutely no musical talent required to make it.  ;D

Anyway, I for one think this whole "Send some rapper to Alaska" thing is pretty cool (pun). Who exactly is being inconvenienced by this other than this rapper guy and Walmart, whom we all loathe anyway?

Well, like I said, I live under a rock, so I didn't know about that law (thank you for pointing it out to me, though, I'm so happy to see that thinking, feeling humans are still treated like vermin with alarming regularity) or that people would subject you to the apparently-quite-soul-destroying indignity of being assumed to have the same tastes as themselves.

@Svarte:

Doing petty things to irritate people is okay as long as you don't like them? Scary world.

I was not assumed to have the same taste.  I was told to change my tastes so that it included these artists.  Which is actually something of an affront to my right and ability to choose what I myself like and don't like, just as they do.  Just because I don't like a lot of the popular music today, I respect and understand that it is my subjective opinion in the matter and nothing else.  I don't go around saying that it's inherently less 'worthy' than any other type of music, even if I may personally feel that from time to time.

So when someone else comes along and tells me I should listen to and enjoy this music because it is "better" than what I prefer, and that it is "better" purely because more people like it, I get a little huffy.

If that's what happens, then it's sad that anyone would do that, yes. It's none of their goddamn business what you listen to and trying to bully you into liking something that you don't is pretty stupid on its face. I have to wonder what the hell they're thinking :/

Hrm, yes, well I'm not all that disturbed by this little practical joke, but this celebrity I've never heard of doesn't really "deserve" it any more than anyone deserves practical jokes. They're stupid little things that hurt people in minor ways for laughs. So I'm a little bit on both sides :P

Re: Popular stuff. All I can say is, don't fall into the pit of vindication. If you say "it's poplar so it sucks" you're literally no better than those saying "it's popular so it's great." If you don't like Pitbull's music that's fine, just so long as you don't justify your dislike with "because it's mainstream" or "because people I don't like like it" or something ridiculous like that.

And yeah, Wal-mart's probably loving the publicity.

What's wrong with going to Alaska?

I don't get it.

I'd love to go to Alaska, personally. Sure, it's the ass end of nowhere, but it's certainly different and the world, I'm told, is a sight to see. Frankly, from the photos, it looks like an awesome place to visit and it doesn't sound like Pitbull minds. The fact that the Goons are banding together to be mildly annoying is something that I'm shocked people are so upset about. Nobody's being hurt, a pretty piss-poor marketing stunt is getting greater press and Pitbull gets to see Alaska. It's an entirely harmless joke and we all know that goonswarms are capable of far worse things. I found this whole thing pretty funny.
