Jackrabbit, i'm not very familiar with the Merino wars.

Let's just say that they were baad.

And if this thread does turn into a debate, on any topic, that's fine. Threads go where they go. But remain civil and don't be obscene or Toady'll step in, obviously.

Yeah, saw this before, it's equally depressing and infuriating.

Oh, and for a little context to all our foreign readers, Queensland is kinda known for holding most of our nutjobs; we had a political party start up there (One Nation) that basically campaigned on racism. Also, you know Answers in Genesis? That crazy, fundy, creationist movement in the states? Yeah, that was founded by a Queenslander. It's also home to Bundaberg rum, while we're listing crimes against humanity.

All google tells me is that the Merino Wars were the clone wars, except with sheep.

You mean, baa-aa-aad?
I have no idea what they are/were, either.

I've actually watched a few answers in genesis videos, and some points that were made were rather clever.

Clever, until the videos became propaganda for young earth christianity, of which I am not a proponent.

Old Earth Christianity ftw.

Feel free to share them then, I'm interested. Because, I'm not going to lie, I see the use of religion as a reason to condemn homosexuality as nothing more than an easy out for people who want a justification for their bigotry. There's no logic to it, it's just trying to justify intolerance that hurts others because of a personal dislike for something.

If a negative position can't be defended by reasons other than a supernatural being, then that's awful.

...I rather liked Bundy rum.  :-[

Anyways....so let me get this straight. Shadow General Bleije (the title sounds infinitely more badass once you remove the Attorney) is arguing that the law needs to remain so women can use it. Does this mean a woman can claim justifiable homicide for killing a guy who hit on her??  :o

Note to self: NEVER go to a Brisbane singles bar.

No, the law doesn't cover justifiable homicide, as far as I can tell. It instead, if successful, downgrades it to manslaughter.
If you dig a little deeper, it could very well be worse than that - in the context which he is referring to it he seems to be referring to a situation where a person feels incredibly threatened, such as rape or domestic abuse. I could be reading it wrong, but it sounds like he's comparing getting hit on by a gay guy to domestic abuse or rape.

Or... the he could be making some comparison that isn't too bad, and the media's portrayal of the law in question makes everyone think that its just about "hitting on a guy". I don't know, I haven't actually read either law, or have any good idea of what they actually do bar articles like "LAW MAKES IT OK TO KILL GAY PEOPLE" from the media, and until then I think I won't make any judgement either way...

On the other hand similar laws have been abolished in every other state, which is pretty obvious something is probably wrong with it.

Australia really is just upside-down America, isn't it?

You know how in some Castlevania games, the castle is eventually flipped upside down, bringing different color schemes, renaming the areas and making all the creatures and bosses way harder and scarier? I think it's like that.

Harder, scarier, and suddenly poisonous. (jk)

Do look a bit more into it, come back and tell us what you think then. It's important to be informed.

Oh, it's okay to debate stuff then? Righto.

Ggamer, all I ask is the following:

1) Love the sinner, not the sin.
2) Don't expect or ask anyone to follow your religion's moral laws (and certainly don't ask for them to be translated to state/federal laws). Unless of course, you have non-religious reasons to do so.

Then we're cool :D

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Don't read the comments on the other side of that Change.org link. Just don't. I know, you're probably curious now but I take no responsibility for what it will do to your brain if you click that damn link.

I think it may be wise to let this religion/morality debate that's brewing here just slide away...  Something tells me it's not going to get that much prettier.

In any case; hooray for outmoded and frankly dreadful laws!  Especially when they're actually getting supported by modern groups and people.
